SARATOK – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Saratok District successfully handled a wildlife emergency on Thursday, 9 July 2026, after receiving a call from the public regarding a black cobra spotted in Taman Seroja Indah.
The incident occurred in the morning when residents noticed the snake near a house in the residential area.
Concerned for their safety, they immediately contacted APM Saratok, prompting the deployment of three personnel to the location.
Upon arrival, the team discovered the cobra concealed beneath a dry banana leaf close to the complainant’s home. Using specialised equipment, the officers managed to capture the reptile safely.
The snake, estimated to be about a foot long, was secured without incident, and the operation concluded with all personnel returning safely to the District Operations Control Centre (PKOD).
APM Saratok commended the public for their vigilance and quick reporting, which allowed the team to respond promptly and prevent potential harm.
The agency emphasised that community cooperation is vital in ensuring swift action during wildlife-related emergencies.
Black cobras, known for their venomous bite, pose a serious threat to humans if encountered in residential areas.
Wildlife experts note that cobras often seek shelter in shaded or concealed spaces, particularly during hot weather.
In Sarawak, encounters with snakes are not uncommon, especially in districts surrounded by vegetation and agricultural land.
Authorities continue to advise residents to remain cautious when spotting snakes and to avoid attempting to capture them without professional assistance.
The Civil Defence Force has urged the public to contact emergency services immediately if such situations arise, stressing that trained personnel are equipped to handle venomous reptiles safely.
This latest case highlights the importance of preparedness and the role of APM in safeguarding communities from wildlife threats.
The successful capture of the cobra demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated emergency response and reinforces the need for public awareness in dealing with potentially dangerous animals.
Residents are reminded that the Civil Defence Force remains on standby for emergencies across Saratok and can be reached through the district’s operations centre.
The agency continues to prioritise public safety, ensuring that both human and wildlife encounters are managed responsibly.
