Meradong Assemblyman Launches Health Screening Initiative for Sarawak Day

BINTANGOR – A strong emphasis on preventive healthcare took centre stage in Meradong this weekend as the local community gathered for a comprehensive health screening programme. Organised by the Visitor Panel Members of the Bintangor Health Clinic, the initiative was held in conjunction with Sarawak Day 2026 celebrations, aiming to raise public awareness about the critical importance of early disease detection.

The event, which opened at the Bintangor Community Hall on Saturday, was officiated by Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, the State Assemblyman for Meradong. He used the platform to advocate for a shift in public mindset regarding personal well-being, urging residents to prioritise health maintenance rather than waiting for illness to strike.

“Prevention is Better Than Cure,” Datuk Ding stated, describing the motto as highly timely for fostering a culture where healthcare is integrated into daily life. He observed that many individuals still adopt a reactive approach, seeking medical attention only after experiencing significant health problems. This delay often results in more complex and costly treatments, whereas regular screenings can identify potential issues before they escalate into serious conditions.

The Assemblyman highlighted that such community-driven programmes offer benefits that extend beyond individual health outcomes. By educating the public on risk factors and healthy lifestyles, these initiatives help create a society that is more informed and proactive. He argued that a healthy population is the foundation of a prosperous community, leading to stronger family units, higher workforce productivity, and sustainable local development.

To support the continued success of these efforts, Datuk Ding announced a financial grant during the ceremony. He allocated RM3,000 to the Bintangor Health Clinic Visiting Panel Members and an additional RM5,000 directly to the clinic. These funds are intended to assist in implementing various annual activities, ensuring that health outreach remains a consistent feature of community life in the area.

The programme featured a wide array of services designed to cater to different aspects of physical well-being. Attendees had access to general health screenings, which included checks for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Dental services were also provided, offering check-ups and extractions to address oral hygiene issues that are often neglected.

In addition to clinical services, the event promoted holistic wellness through body balance tests and light exercise sessions. These activities encouraged participants to engage in physical movement, demonstrating simple ways to stay active. To add an element of enjoyment and encourage participation, lucky draws were held throughout the day, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere.

Dr. Dayang Haniffa, the Family Physician and Programme Chair, played a key role in organising the event. Her leadership ensured that the medical aspects of the screening were conducted professionally and efficiently. She was supported by Ley Chee Hua, the Chairman of the Bintangor Health Clinic Advisory Panel, who worked closely with community volunteers to facilitate the smooth running of the day.

The collaboration between healthcare professionals, community leaders, and government representatives exemplifies a successful model of public health engagement. By bringing services directly to the people, the organisers removed barriers to access, making it easier for residents, particularly the elderly and those with limited mobility, to receive care.

Early detection of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension is crucial in Malaysia, where lifestyle-related illnesses are on the rise. Regular monitoring allows for timely intervention, which can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the burden on hospital resources. The Bintangor initiative serves as a practical example of how grassroots efforts can complement formal healthcare systems.

Datuk Ding’s presence underscored the state government’s commitment to supporting rural and semi-urban health infrastructure. The allocation of funds reflects a recognition that community panels play a vital role in bridging the gap between clinics and the public. Their ability to mobilise residents and organise such events is invaluable in promoting long-term health sustainability.

As the event concluded, participants expressed appreciation for the accessible and comprehensive services provided. The positive response indicates a growing awareness of health issues within the Meradong constituency. Continued support for such programmes will be essential in maintaining this momentum and ensuring that the community remains healthy and resilient.
