MIRI – Sarawak is preparing to welcome a groundbreaking initiative in healthcare and education with the establishment of the Fudan University Joint Research Centre for Innovative Drug Development in Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine and AI Medical Experience Centre at the Miri City Council’s Old Building.
The project, developed by Imasa Dinasti Sdn. Bhd. in collaboration with Fudan University, China, combines modern medical technology with traditional practices, supported by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
It is among the first of its kind in the region, marking a significant step in Sarawak’s ambition to become a hub for health innovation.
Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin Assemblyman, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, said the centre will introduce a new approach to medicine while enhancing medical education and scientific research.
“When operational, this centre will offer facilities for the public to experience treatment using ‘AI doctor’ technology based on smart medical systems,” he explained during his visit to the site on Monday.
Renovation of the old MBM building is now 85 per cent complete, with the AI Medical Experience Centre set to occupy the ground floor and the Fudan University Joint Research Centre located on the upper floor.
The first phase is expected to be completed early next year, paving the way for the eventual establishment of the Fudan School of Medicine and a full university campus in Miri.
Dato Sri Lee emphasised that the centre will strengthen strategic ties between Sarawak and China, positioning Miri as a regional hub for drug research, medical AI technology, and integrative medicine.
“This centre will generate various economic and social impacts, including attracting investments, creating job opportunities and elevating Miri’s reputation as an international health innovation city,” he added.
Research at the centre is expected to focus on developing new medicines that combine traditional herbs with modern science, AI-guided diagnostic services, and blockchain-based medical record management to enhance safety and efficiency in healthcare systems.
The project is scheduled to begin trial operations in 2026, with full operations expected in the first quarter of the same year.
Officially named the Fudan University Joint Research Center for Innovative Drug Development in Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine AI Medical Experience Center (Miri), or FDIIMRDC AI, the facility is also nicknamed “The Hall”.
Once completed, the centre will serve as a new landmark in Kenyalang Smart City, Miri, symbolising Sarawak’s commitment to innovation, international collaboration, and the integration of advanced technology into healthcare and education.
