MIRI – A 47-year-old Indonesian national was fined RM4,000 by the Miri Magistrate’s Court on 24 June after admitting to possessing methamphetamine.
The accused pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which prohibits possession of dangerous drugs without authorisation. The court ruled that failure to pay the fine would result in seven months’ imprisonment.
Police reports confirmed that the man was arrested on 24 February at around 12.45pm during a raid conducted by the Narcotics Crime Division of Miri District Police Headquarters.
The operation took place at a premises along Jalan Rawa 12, Taman Ceria, Bandar Baru Permyjaya. Officers discovered 30 tubes containing methamphetamine, weighing a total of 2.37 grams.
Authorities highlighted that the case reflects a growing concern in Miri, where drug-related offences are no longer confined to local citizens but increasingly involve foreign nationals.
The District Police Chief stressed that the spread of drug abuse and trafficking poses a serious threat to community safety and requires strong enforcement measures.
Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries penalties designed to deter possession of controlled substances, with fines and imprisonment depending on the severity of the offence.
The court’s decision in this case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding Malaysia’s strict anti-drug laws.
