MIRI – A collaborative enforcement operation involving the Royal Malaysian Police and local council officials has been conducted in the Miri district to enhance public safety and curb criminal activities.
The integrated initiative saw dozens of personnel deployed across various hotspots to ensure compliance with both traffic and entertainment regulations.
The operation, which commenced at 10:00 pm on 18 July 2026, involved a total of thirty-eight police officers, including five senior commanders and thirty-three general members.
They were joined by thirteen staff members from the Miri Municipal Council, highlighting a multi-agency approach to maintaining order.
This joint effort aims to maximise resource efficiency and provide a more comprehensive coverage of the district’s administrative area.
Prior to the deployment, a briefing session was held at Ruai Kenyalang within the Miri District Police Headquarters complex.
Assistant Superintendent Lee Yen Fang, the Head of the Miri District Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division, outlined the strategic objectives to all participating teams.
The plan included setting up roadblocks, conducting snap checks, performing vehicle patrols, and inspecting licensed entertainment premises.
One of the primary components of the operation was the establishment of roadblocks at key intersections. Officers from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division scrutinised vehicles for regulatory compliance.
Several traffic offences were detected during these checks, contributing to a rise in enforcement actions. Common violations included driving without a valid licence, operating vehicles with modified structures or exhaust systems, missing side mirrors, and using decorative number plates that do not meet legal standards.
Expired road tax discs were also frequently cited. In total, fifty compound summonses were issued to motorists throughout the night.
Simultaneously, mobile patrol units and snap check teams were dispatched to residential housing estates, villages, and main thoroughfares.
The objective of these movements was to implement a strategy of “omnipresence”, ensuring that police visibility remained high in community spaces.
This tactic is designed to deter potential offenders by creating the perception that law enforcement is always nearby.
For residents, the visible presence of officers provides reassurance that their neighbourhoods are safe, peaceful, and free from criminal intrusion.
In addition to traffic and street patrols, specific attention was given to entertainment venues. Inspectors visited various outlets to verify operational compliance.
During these checks, two premises were found to be operating without valid Public Entertainment Licences. Consequently, two compound notices were issued to the respective owners.
This action underscores the authorities’ commitment to ensuring that all businesses adhere to licensing laws, which are crucial for maintaining public order and safety standards in nightlife areas.
Assistant Superintendent Lee Yen Fang emphasised that such integrated operations would continue to be carried out periodically.
The goal is not only to enforce laws but also to build trust between the police force and the community. By working alongside the municipal council, the police can address a broader range of issues, from noise complaints to illegal business practices, in a coordinated manner.
The success of this operation relies heavily on inter-agency cooperation. The involvement of council staff allows for immediate action on local by-law violations, while police focus on criminal and traffic offences.
This synergy ensures that no aspect of public order is overlooked. Residents are encouraged to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities and adhering to established regulations.
