MIRI – Law enforcement authorities in Miri have intensified their efforts to curb illegal street racing and disruptive motorcycling activities through a targeted overnight operation.
The initiative, led by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, resulted in the confiscation of eleven motorcycles and the issuance of numerous legal notices.
The enforcement drive took place from 11:00 pm on 18 July 2026 until 3:00 am on 19 July 2026. Officers focused their attention on several key locations known for nocturnal vehicular gatherings.
These areas included Miri Town, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina, Jalan Canada Hill, Jalan Piasau, and Jalan Pujut.
By concentrating resources in these hotspots, police aimed to disrupt organised groups that often compromise public order and traffic safety.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohd Farhan Lee bin Abdullah, the Miri District Police Chief, oversaw the operation.
He explained that the primary objective was to prevent “street thug” activities, which frequently lead to accidents, noise pollution, and public disturbance.
The presence of uniformed officers served as both a deterrent and a means to identify offenders actively violating traffic regulations.
During the four-hour window, personnel stopped and inspected a total of thirty-five individuals, comprising thirty-one men and four women.
Alongside them, thirty-five motorcycles were subjected to thorough checks. The rigorous scrutiny revealed multiple instances of non-compliance with statutory requirements.
As a result, eleven motorcycles were seized under Section 60(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. This provision allows police to impound vehicles involved in serious offences or those deemed unfit for road use due to illegal modifications or lack of documentation.
In addition to the seizures, officers issued forty-five compound summonses. These notices covered a wide spectrum of traffic violations.
Common offences detected included riding without a valid driving licence, operating motorcycles with modified exhaust systems designed to produce excessive noise, and removing essential safety components such as side mirrors.
Other technical breaches involved the absence of proper registration plates or the use of decorative, non-standard number plates that obscure vehicle identity.
ACP Mohd Farhan Lee bin Abdullah emphasised that the police force maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards individuals who engage in dangerous street gang behaviour.
Such activities not only endanger the participants but also pose significant risks to other road users and pedestrians. The authority of the law will be applied strictly to ensure that public spaces remain safe and orderly.
“The public is advised to always obey the road laws, not make modifications that violate the original specifications of the vehicle and avoid any activities that could disrupt public order,” stated the Police Chief.
His remarks underscore the importance of adhering to manufacturer specifications and legal standards when maintaining personal vehicles.
Illegal modifications can compromise structural integrity and braking efficiency, leading to potentially fatal outcomes.
Community members are encouraged to play an active role in maintaining neighbourhood safety. Anyone with information regarding planned street races or habitual offenders is urged to report these details to the Miri IPD or the nearest police station.
Such intelligence helps authorities plan more effective interventions and allocate resources where they are needed most.
The seized motorcycles will undergo further examination to determine the extent of illegal alterations. Owners facing confiscation must navigate legal procedures to reclaim their property, which typically involves rectifying violations and paying substantial fines. This process serves as a strong disincentive against future non-compliance.
This operation reflects a broader regional strategy to enhance road safety in Sarawak. By combining visible enforcement with community engagement, police aim to change the culture of reckless riding.
The high number of summonses issued in a single night indicates that education and deterrence must go hand in hand to achieve lasting results.
Residents in the affected areas have previously complained about noise disturbances late at night. The recent crackdown addresses these grievances directly, demonstrating responsiveness to public concerns.
