SELANGOR – Sarawak artistic gymnast Joachim Rafael Ambrose secured a bronze medal in the men’s individual parallel bars event at the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 at Tun Abdul Razak Chancellor Hall on Sunday.
Joachim finished with a score of 11.200 points in the final, sharing third place with Pahang representative Muhammad Zharfan Mohd Shakri, who recorded the same score.
The gold medal was shared by Penang’s Wilson Yeoh Wei Sin and Kelantan’s Nor Adam Hazziq Nor Azaha after both gymnasts produced identical scores of 12.450 points.
Wilson’s total comprised 4.000 points for difficulty and 8.450 points for execution. Nor Adam Hazziq, meanwhile, received 4.100 points for difficulty and 8.350 points for execution.
The equal scores resulted in both gymnasts being awarded the gold medal, while Joachim and Muhammad Zharfan finished jointly in third place.
Joachim’s performance added another medal to Sarawak’s haul in artistic gymnastics at the Selangor edition of the Games. His bronze also contributed to the state’s overall medal campaign as athletes compete across the SUKMA programme.
The parallel bars event requires gymnasts to combine elements such as swings, strength-based movements, transitions and dismounts while being assessed on both the difficulty of their routines and their execution.
For Joachim, the 11.200-point performance was enough to secure a place on the podium in a closely contested final. The shared third-place finish meant that four gymnasts occupied the medal positions, with two gold medallists and two bronze medallists.
The result also marked another medal contribution from Sarawak’s artistic gymnastics squad during SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026. The state contingent has continued to compete across the gymnastics programme as part of its wider campaign at the Games.
With the bronze medal, Joachim joins the group of Sarawak athletes who have contributed to the state’s medal tally during the Selangor-hosted edition of SUKMA.
The result was determined by the final scores awarded to each gymnast, with the narrow gap between the podium positions highlighting the competitive nature of the event. Joachim’s 11.200 points placed him behind the two joint gold medallists but level with Muhammad Zharfan.
Sarawak’s latest medal from artistic gymnastics adds to the contingent’s results as competition continues at SUKMA 2026, with athletes from the state seeking further podium finishes in the remaining events.
