SELANGOR – Sarawak’s cycling team ended its campaign at the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 with three gold and four bronze medals across the mountain bike (MTB), road, BMX and track cycling events.
Assistant Head of the Cycling Contingent, Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, attributed the medal haul to the combined efforts of athletes, coaches, managers and the wider support team throughout the Games preparation and competition.
He said the results reflected more than the performances delivered during the races, pointing to the training, discipline, sacrifices and teamwork that went into preparing the Sarawak contingent for the Games.
“I am very proud of the entire team. This success is not only the result of the athletes’ performance when racing in the MTB, highway, BMX and track events, but also the result of the training, discipline, sacrifice and cooperation of the entire team who have together made Sarawak proud,” he told UKAS on Sunday.
The seven medals came from four cycling disciplines, giving Sarawak three gold medals alongside four bronze medals by the conclusion of its campaign.
Ahmad said the achievement should serve as an important milestone for the team while also providing encouragement for its cyclists and support personnel to continue working towards stronger results.
He stressed that the team should not regard its current medal haul as the end of its development. Instead, he said, the cyclists and support staff should use the experience to identify areas that require improvement ahead of future competitions.
The cycling programme at SUKMA features several disciplines, requiring athletes to compete under different conditions and demands. The combination of MTB, road, BMX and track events also requires specialised preparation and support for riders competing in their respective categories.
For Sarawak, the three gold medals and four bronze medals provide a strong finish to its cycling campaign at the Selangor Games. The results also add to the state’s wider medal tally across the various sports contested at SUKMA XXII.
Ahmad said the team now needed to maintain its focus on development rather than relying solely on the results achieved at the current Games.
“Our journey does not stop here. We must continue to train, improve our weaknesses and become stronger to face the upcoming SUKMA in Kelantan and subsequent championships,” he said.
The next SUKMA edition in Kelantan will provide another major target for Sarawak’s cycling programme, while other national and regional championships will offer opportunities for the athletes to gain further competitive experience.
Ahmad also congratulated the entire Sarawak cycling team for its performance in Selangor, highlighting the contribution made by everyone involved in the campaign.
“Congratulations Sarawak Cycling Team. You have made Sarawak proud. Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban!” he said.
The closing medal tally gives Sarawak cycling a total of seven medals from the Selangor edition, with the team now turning its attention towards continued training, development and preparation for future competitions.
