LUNDU – Emergency response specialists successfully neutralised a highly perilous wildlife threat in a residential area after a venomous reptile breached the perimeter of a local property.
The Lundu District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) swung into immediate action following a distressed call regarding a snake intrusion, deploying a trained wildlife handling team to ensure the safety of the household and surrounding neighbourhood.
The incident unfolded on Thursday when a local homeowner noticed an unusual movement in their garden. Upon closer inspection, the complainant discovered a large snake concealing itself directly beneath a flower tree within the residential yard.
Recognising the extreme danger associated with unfamiliar reptiles, the resident immediately contacted the Civil Defence Force (APM) branch in Lundu to request professional assistance in capturing the creature.
A specialised squad from APM Lundu arrived swiftly at the scene to evaluate the situation. Upon arriving at the garden, responders identified the hidden reptile as a tedung selar, commonly known as a King Cobra.
The formidable apex predator was measured at an impressive 6.5 feet in length, presenting a severe risk of a lethal encounter had the homeowner attempted to intervene independently.
Utilising their specialised training and tactical equipment, the emergency personnel executed a precise capture operation.
The squad deployed the standard municipal pinching and snaring technique, which allows responders to immobilise the snake’s upper body securely while keeping a safe distance from its highly venomous fangs.
The reptile was successfully contained within minutes without causing any injuries to the occupants or the emergency team.
King Cobras are among the most venomous and intimidating reptiles found in the region, possessing neurotoxic venom capable of causing rapid respiratory failure.
Due to expanding urban perimeters and changing weather conditions, wildlife encounters in residential green spaces have become increasingly common, making the quick response of local emergency units vital for community safety.
Following the successful extraction, the captured King Cobra was safely secured in a specialised containment unit.
APM personnel routinely coordinate with local wildlife authorities to ensure that such captured apex predators are safely relocated back into deep, uninhabited forest reserves, preserving the ecological balance while permanently removing the threat from human settlements.
The APM Lundu Sematan Public Relations and Documentation Unit highlighted that the successful operation reflects the core values of the agency, operating under the institutional motto of “Ready, Fast & Integrity”.
The department emphasised that their teams are continuously on standby to handle complex wildlife conflicts and volatile environmental hazards to protect civilian life.
In light of this incident, local authorities have issued a fresh advisory urging the public to keep their residential compounds clear of dense undergrowth and overgrown foliage, which often serve as attractive hiding spots for stray wildlife.
Residents are strongly cautioned never to provoke or attempt to handle large snakes themselves, as defensive strikes can be exceptionally fast and fatal.
Members of the public who encounter dangerous wildlife or face any critical emergencies within the district are urged to contact thespecialisedd local responders immediately.
The APM Lundu team can be reached directly via their dedicated district operations hotline at 082-711292 for prompt and professional intervention.
