MERADONG – Police in Meradong intensified their crackdown on illegal motorcycle racing and dangerous modifications with a midnight operation at Mile 8, Jalan KJD, Bintangor, on 5 July 2026.
The enforcement exercise, known as Op Motorcycle (Road Thugs), was carried out between 12.00 midnight and 3.00 am by the Meradong District Police Headquarters (IPD Meradong).
The operation was aimed at curbing unlawful racing activities, preventing unsafe vehicle modifications, and ensuring motorcyclists adhere to road regulations and approved specifications.
Officers highlighted that such activities not only endanger the riders themselves but also pose serious risks to other road users. Throughout the three-hour operation, police issued 17 summonses for a range of offences.
These included riding without a valid driving licence, using modified exhaust systems, failing to install side mirrors, displaying registration numbers that did not meet specifications, altering vehicle structures, and operating motorcycles with expired licences (LKM).
In addition to the summonses, five motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987. The seizures were made to facilitate further investigation and enforcement action against offenders.
Police stressed that the confiscation of vehicles sends a strong message to those who continue to flout traffic laws.
Authorities underscored the seriousness of illegal racing, noting that such behaviour disrupts public peace and threatens community safety.
The police urged parents to play a proactive role in monitoring their children’s activities at night, discouraging them from engaging in unhealthy or unlawful practices.
Parents were also reminded to ensure their children do not modify motorcycles in ways that compromise safety, particularly the use of noisy exhausts which disturb residents and undermine community comfort.
IPD Meradong confirmed that similar operations will continue on weekends and public holidays. The sustained enforcement strategy is designed to deter illegal racing, reduce noise pollution, and promote compliance with traffic laws.
Police believe that consistent monitoring and strict action will help restore order and protect the well-being of both riders and the wider community.
Community leaders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a necessary step to safeguard public safety and maintain harmony in residential areas.
The operation reflects broader efforts by Sarawak police to strengthen road safety enforcement and address issues linked to reckless motorcycle use.
As enforcement continues, the public is encouraged to cooperate with police officers and abide by traffic laws.
Authorities emphasised that compliance is essential to ensuring safer roads and preventing accidents linked to irresponsible riding practices.
