MERADONG – A thirty-year-old motorcyclist has lost his life following a severe head-on collision with a four-wheel-drive vehicle on a major road in the Meradong district.
The fatal incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and local law enforcement authorities.
The accident took place at approximately 2:00 pm on 19 July 2026 at Batu 8, along Jalan Kelupu in the Sungai Gemuan area.
Preliminary reports indicate that the crash involved a Modenas motorcycle and a Toyota Hilux pickup truck. The scene was attended by police officers and medical personnel from the nearby Bintangor Health Clinic.
The victim, identified as Mohammad Lukman bin Salleh, was a resident of Rh. Rabaie in Kampung Darul Falah, Bintangor.
Upon arrival, the Assistant Medical Officer examined the rider and confirmed that he had succumbed to his injuries at the scene. No attempts at resuscitation were successful due to the severity of the impact.
The driver of the Toyota Hilux, a thirty-five-year-old man, along with two passengers aged thirty-five and twelve, escaped the collision without sustaining any physical injuries.
Their vehicle, however, likely suffered significant damage to its front end during the impact. The fact that the occupants of the larger vehicle emerged unharmed highlights the vulnerability of motorcyclists in such high-speed collisions.
Initial investigations conducted by the Meradong District Police Headquarters suggest that the accident was caused by a loss of control by the motorcyclist.
It is believed that Mr. Lukman was travelling from Sibu towards Bintangor when his motorcycle veered into the opposite lane.
The Toyota Hilux, which was heading from Bintangor towards Sibu, was unable to brake or swerve in time to avoid the sudden intrusion, resulting in a direct frontal collision.
Police have opened an investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
This section carries heavy penalties for offenders found negligent in maintaining safe driving standards. Officers are currently gathering witness statements and examining the wreckage to determine if mechanical failure or excessive speed contributed to the loss of control.
The deceased’s body was transported by police to Sarikei Hospital for formal documentation and a post-mortem examination.
This procedure is standard practice to establish the exact cause of death and to rule out any other contributing factors such as medical emergencies prior to the crash.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Meradong police have issued a stern reminder to all road users. They urged motorists and riders to exercise extreme caution, particularly on rural roads where visibility and road conditions can vary.
