The National Economic Action Council (MTEN) convened today to deliberate on several proposals aimed at reinforcing Malaysia’s economic resilience amid global supply chain disruptions.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who chaired the meeting, highlighted the importance of easing the burden on small traders and hawkers facing rising operational costs.
Among the key proposals discussed was the reduction of rental rates for premises managed by local authorities (PBT).
The Prime Minister noted that the MADANI government had already introduced rental reductions through Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).
He urged more PBTs nationwide to adopt similar measures, stressing that such initiatives are vital for the survival of small businesses in challenging economic conditions.
The meeting also reviewed strategic measures to address global uncertainties, including the development of a global supply crisis monitoring dashboard.
This tool is expected to provide real-time insights into supply and price trends, enabling ministries to respond more effectively to disruptions.
Anwar emphasised that ministries must re-coordinate their initiatives to ensure assistance reaches target groups, particularly the poor and vulnerable.
He underscored that no one should be left behind as the government works to mitigate the impact of rising living costs.
The council also examined proposals to strengthen policies related to supply and pricing, recognising that global crises continue to exert pressure on the cost of essential goods.
The Prime Minister reiterated that MTEN’s focus remains on ensuring continuity of supply and protecting vulnerable communities.
The government’s approach reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding livelihoods while maintaining economic stability.
By combining compassionate policies such as rental reductions with strategic monitoring tools, Malaysia aims to bolster its preparedness against external shocks.
Officials stressed that collaboration across ministries and agencies is crucial to achieving these goals.
