SIMUNJAN – The water supply situation in the Simunjan district has faced compounded challenges following a combination of critically low raw water levels and unexpected infrastructure damage.
Residents have been enduring disruptions since late July, but the issue was exacerbated by a significant pipe leak that occurred earlier this week, further straining an already compromised distribution network.
The root of the initial disruption dates back to 28 July 2026, when the Simunjan Water Treatment Plant (LRA) was forced to curtail its operations.
Authorities reported that the raw water level at the plant’s inlet had dropped to a critical point, rendering full operational capacity impossible.
Consequently, the entire district became reliant on an alternative source, with water being channelled from the Serian Water Treatment Plant through the Gedong Booster Pump pipeline system.
This shift placed immense pressure on the secondary infrastructure, which was not originally designed to bear the full load of Simunjan’s daily consumption requirements.
Complicating matters further, a major setback occurred on 31 July 2026 when a pipe along the Jalan Gedong–Simunjan route suffered a substantial leak.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the damage was caused by dredging and cleaning activities carried out by a contractor in the vicinity.
The breach interrupted the vital flow of water from Serian, leaving many households without access to piped supply for several days.
Emergency repair crews were immediately dispatched to the site, working tirelessly to seal the leak and restore structural integrity to the pipeline.
As of 1 August 2026, repair work is nearing completion, with officials expecting finalisation by late evening. Once the repairs are certified safe, the continuous re-channelling of water from the Serian LRA to Simunjan will resume.
This restoration is viewed as a critical step toward stabilising the local supply, although authorities caution that full pressure normalisation may take time as the system refills and balances.
In the interim, the demand for emergency water delivery via tankers has surged across the district. JBALB Samarahan has acknowledged the high volume of requests and stated that teams are doing their utmost to meet the needs of affected communities.
To bolster these efforts, the local branch has taken the initiative to borrow resources from neighbouring divisions.
Sixteen large water barrels have been secured from JBALB Kuching and deployed to strategic points in Simunjan, providing additional storage capacity for residents collecting emergency supplies.
Beyond tanker deliveries, authorities are implementing longer-term temporary measures to improve accessibility. Plans are underway to install centralised water collection tanks at several identified strategic locations.
These hubs aim to streamline the distribution process, allowing residents to collect water more efficiently without relying solely on individual household deliveries.
This approach is expected to reduce wait times and ensure a more equitable distribution of available resources during the crisis period.
The State Assemblyman for N25 Simunjan has been actively liaising with the responsible parties to seek clarification and expedite solutions.
In a recent update, the representative highlighted the collaborative efforts between different JBALB branches and emphasised the commitment to resolving the issue comprehensively.
The cooperation of contractors in rectifying the accidental damage and the swift response from utility engineers have been noted as positive steps toward mitigation.
Residents are urged to remain patient and cooperative as the repair works conclude. While the immediate focus is on fixing the physical infrastructure, the underlying issue of low raw water levels at the Simunjan LRA remains a concern for long-term planning.
Experts suggest that such incidents highlight the need for diversified water sources and robust backup systems to withstand environmental fluctuations and accidental damages.
JBALB has expressed gratitude to the public for their understanding during this challenging period. The utility provider reaffirmed its commitment to restoring full stability to the water supply network and ensuring that essential services are maintained.
Community members are advised to stay informed through official channels for updates on the restoration timeline and any further instructions regarding water conservation or collection points.
