Family Picnic Turns Tragic: Woman and Nephew Drown at Penunjuk Beach

KEMAMAN — What was meant to be a relaxing family outing turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a woman and her 12-year-old nephew drowned while bathing at Penunjuk Beach in Kijal, Kemaman, on Saturday evening.

According to Kemaman District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli, the incident occurred around 4.15 pm when the family of seven, who were enjoying a picnic, decided to take a swim. However, they were suddenly hit by strong waves that swept them into deeper waters.

“Five of the victims were rescued by family members and members of the public, but two were found unconscious,” he said.

The two victims were quickly rushed for medical attention. The 12-year-old girl was taken to the Kijal Health Clinic but was tragically pronounced dead at 5.23 pm. Her aunt, a 39-year-old woman, was brought to Kemaman Hospital’s Emergency Unit, where she was confirmed dead at 5.42 pm.

Superintendent Mohd Razi added that initial investigations suggest the victims were caught off-guard by sudden waves while bathing in a non-designated swimming area. The sea conditions at the time were believed to be rough, contributing to the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Kijal Fire and Rescue Station Chief Azizee Alias said that by the time his team arrived, members of the public had already managed to rescue the other five family members.

“The firefighters who arrived at the scene provided initial treatment to the survivors before handing them over to the Ministry of Health (MOH) and police for further action,” he said.

Authorities have since reminded the public to avoid swimming at beaches without lifeguards, especially during unpredictable weather conditions. The community is urged to remain cautious and prioritize safety during recreational activities near the sea.

The remains of both victims have been sent to Kemaman Hospital for post-mortem examination, and police have classified the case as sudden death. – Bernama
