Premier Highlights Sustainable Forestry as Pillar of Sarawak’s Future

KUCHING – Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, reaffirmed the State’s commitment to sustainable forestry during the Opening Ceremony and Gala Dinner of the 21st Malaysian Forestry Conference (MFC) 2026, held at the Pullman Hotel on 13 July.

In his keynote address, the Premier emphasised that Sarawak’s forests must be managed responsibly to safeguard their ecological, economic and social contributions. He described forests as strategic resources that underpin livelihoods, environmental stability and long-term economic resilience, rather than simply natural assets to be exploited.

The Premier highlighted that environmental sustainability is one of the three strategic pillars of the Sarawak Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), alongside economic prosperity and social inclusivity. He explained that Sarawak’s development pathway seeks to balance economic advancement with environmental responsibility, ensuring that progress does not compromise the ecological wealth future generations depend upon.

He noted that Sarawak is transforming its forestry sector from a traditional resource-based model into a knowledge-driven and innovation-led industry. Beyond timber, forests hold immense potential for new industries, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), bio-based products, pharmaceuticals and herbal medicines. This diversification reflects Sarawak’s ambition to harness forest resources for broader economic and scientific benefits.

Recognising the increasing role of science and technology, the Premier encouraged the forestry sector to embrace emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). He said AI could enhance research capabilities, strengthen forest monitoring systems and support data-driven decision-making, ensuring that forestry management remains efficient and forward-looking.

During the ceremony, the Premier witnessed the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and one Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Forest Department Sarawak and strategic partners. These collaborations include:

  • The Sabah Forestry Department on forest fire management.
  • Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) on hardwood research.
  • Craun Research Sdn. Bhd. on tissue culture and industrial forest plantation research.
  • Tulen International Sdn. Bhd. on sustainable forest nursery development.
  • Sarawak Energy Berhad through SEB Power Sdn. Bhd. for the Wildlife Monitoring and Rescue (WiMoR) flora component under the Baleh Hydroelectric Project.

The Premier also launched the 21st Malaysian Forestry Conference 2026, citing the recent recognition of the Bukit Lima Urban Nature Reserve in Sibu by the Malaysia Book of Records as the Largest Protected Urban Peat Swamp Nature Reserve. He described this achievement as a testament to Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to conserve its natural environment for future generations.

The Premier’s remarks reflect Sarawak’s broader vision of integrating sustainability into its development agenda. By positioning forestry as a sector that combines ecological stewardship with innovation, Sarawak aims to create a resilient economy that benefits both people and the environment.

The conference, attended by forestry experts, policymakers and industry leaders, provided a platform to discuss sustainable practices and explore new opportunities for collaboration. It underscored the importance of partnerships between government agencies, research institutions and private companies in advancing forestry innovation.

Sarawak’s approach to forestry management demonstrates its commitment to aligning with global sustainability goals. By investing in research, technology and conservation, the State is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable resource management. The Premier’s emphasis on balancing development with ecological responsibility highlights Sarawak’s determination to ensure that its natural heritage remains intact while supporting economic growth.

As the forestry sector continues to evolve, Sarawak’s focus on innovation and sustainability is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the State’s future. The Premier’s call for responsible stewardship serves as a reminder that forests are not only vital for biodiversity but also for the social and economic well-being of communities across Sarawak.
