KABO – A comprehensive community awareness programme focusing on dengue prevention, fire safety and crime awareness was successfully held on 14 July 2026 at Makup House, Nanga Lempa, Kabo. The programme was officiated by Yang Berhormat Friday Anak Belik, Assemblyman for N39 Krian, who expressed strong support for initiatives aimed at improving community awareness in public health, safety and crime prevention. His presence underscored the importance of empowering rural communities with accurate information and practical knowledge.

The event was organised through collaboration between several agencies, including the Saratok Fire and Rescue Station, Saratok District Health Office and Saratok District Police Headquarters (IPD). Council members, tuai rumah and residents of Makup House also participated, reflecting a united community effort to address pressing concerns.

One of the main components of the programme was a detailed briefing on dengue prevention delivered by Assistant Environmental Health Officer Encik Haji Kiple bin Haji Jenai from the Saratok District Health Office’s Dengue Vector Unit. He emphasised the importance of eliminating Aedes mosquito breeding sites, maintaining environmental cleanliness and adopting preventive habits to reduce dengue transmission.

Participants were reminded that stagnant water, unclean surroundings and improper waste disposal are major contributors to mosquito breeding. The briefing encouraged residents to conduct regular inspections around their homes, cover water containers, clear clogged drains and dispose of unused items that may collect water.

A fire safety session was also conducted by Senior Fire Officer II, Mr Dominic Anak Ribun, who shared essential knowledge on fire prevention, emergency response and household safety practices. He highlighted common causes of fires in rural homes, such as faulty wiring, unattended cooking and improper handling of flammable materials.

Residents were taught how to respond quickly during emergencies, including the importance of early evacuation, safe use of fire extinguishers and maintaining clear escape routes. The session aimed to equip families with practical skills that could save lives and minimise property damage.

Crime awareness formed another key part of the programme. Inspector Sofia binti Zainuddin and Sergeant Roslinda binti Utubesar from IPD Saratok delivered a briefing on cybercrime and drug abuse, two issues increasingly affecting communities across Sarawak.

Residents were exposed to common online scam tactics, including impersonation, phishing, fraudulent investment schemes and fake loan offers. The officers advised participants to be cautious when sharing personal information online, verify unknown contacts and report suspicious digital activities.

The dangers of drug abuse were also highlighted, with officers explaining how substance misuse can lead to severe consequences for individuals, families and society. They stressed the importance of early intervention, community vigilance and reporting drug-related activities to authorities.

Throughout the programme, residents engaged actively with presenters, asking questions and sharing concerns related to health, safety and crime. The interactive nature of the event helped strengthen understanding and encouraged community members to adopt preventive measures in their daily lives.

Organisers noted that the programme aims to increase awareness and knowledge among residents, particularly in rural areas where access to information may be limited. By addressing dengue, fire safety and crime prevention in a single event, the initiative provided a holistic approach to community well-being.

The collaboration between agencies demonstrated the importance of multi-sector cooperation in addressing public health and safety challenges. Each agency contributed expertise that collectively strengthened the community’s ability to protect itself from preventable risks.

The programme is expected to inspire similar initiatives in other longhouses and villages, ensuring that more communities benefit from awareness campaigns. Organisers hope that residents will continue practising environmental cleanliness, fire safety measures and vigilance against cybercrime and drug abuse.

Ultimately, the event reflects a shared commitment to building a healthier, safer and more resilient community in Kabo. By empowering residents with knowledge and practical skills, the programme contributes to long-term efforts to enhance public safety and improve quality of life across the region.
