KUCHING – Police in Kuching have detained four individuals in connection with a violent robbery that left a victim injured in a parking area along Jalan Petanak earlier this month.

The suspects, three men and one woman aged between 22 and 27, were taken into custody following swift action by officers from the Kuching District Police Headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department. The arrests were made on 2 July 2026, shortly after the incident was reported.

Investigators seized a Honda RS150R motorcycle and three mobile phones believed to be linked to the case. These items are now being examined as part of the ongoing inquiry. Authorities confirmed that all four suspects tested positive for drugs during urine screening.

Checks on their backgrounds revealed that each of the suspects had prior criminal records. Offences included violations under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the Penal Code, and the Open Gambling Houses Act 1953. One of the suspects was also found to be on the police wanted list at the time of arrest.

The suspects have been remanded for four days to assist with further investigation. The case is being pursued under Section 394 of the Penal Code, which covers robbery resulting in injury. Convictions under this section can lead to imprisonment of up to 20 years, along with fines or corporal punishment.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the arrests and emphasised the importance of community cooperation in tackling crime. He noted that public vigilance and timely reporting of suspicious activities remain crucial in maintaining safety across the district.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing drug-related crime and repeat offenders. According to police records, cases involving young adults with prior convictions have been rising, particularly in urban centres such as Kuching. Analysts point out that drug abuse often plays a significant role in driving individuals towards violent offences, including robbery.

Local authorities have been working to strengthen community policing initiatives, encouraging residents to share information that could help prevent further incidents. The Royal Malaysian Police continue to stress that public collaboration is vital in ensuring effective crime prevention and response.

Residents with information related to this case or other criminal activities are urged to contact the Kuching District Police Operations Room at 082-244444 or report directly at the nearest police station. Officials have assured that all information provided will be treated confidentially.

The arrests serve as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by drug-related offences in Sarawak. Community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger rehabilitation programmes to reduce recidivism among young offenders. They argue that while enforcement is necessary, long-term solutions must also address the root causes of addiction and crime.

In recent years, Sarawak authorities have launched several initiatives aimed at curbing illegal gambling and drug distribution networks. These measures include targeted raids, awareness campaigns, and closer collaboration with local organisations. However, police acknowledge that sustained efforts are required to achieve lasting results.

The Jalan Petanak case underscores the need for continued vigilance and coordinated action between law enforcement and the public. As investigations proceed, authorities remain committed to ensuring justice is served and that community safety is upheld.
