PADAWAN – The Padawan District Police Headquarters welcomed a courtesy visit from Batu Kitang Assemblyman YB Dato Ir Lo Khere Chiang and members of the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) on 14 July 2026.
The delegation, which included MCPF Secretary Leonard Sabu, Dr Rajan Thangaveloo, Mr Thomas, and Miss Imelda, was received by Padawan District Police Chief P/Supt Barry Anak William together with division heads at the IPD Meeting Room.
During the session, discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between the police and the community through the introduction of a Neighbourhood Crime Watch programme in the Batu Kitang constituency. The initiative is expected to be rolled out in several stages, with the aim of enhancing public awareness and building stronger ties between residents and law enforcement.
Police officials highlighted that community-based programmes such as this are vital in bridging the gap between authorities and the public. By encouraging active participation, the initiative seeks to empower residents to take a proactive role in safeguarding their neighbourhoods.
The Neighbourhood Crime Watch model has been successfully implemented in other parts of Sarawak, where it has helped reduce petty crime and improve communication channels between citizens and police. Authorities believe that replicating this approach in Batu Kitang will contribute to safer living environments and foster greater trust in law enforcement.
Assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang expressed his support for the programme, noting that community involvement is key to effective crime prevention. He emphasised that the initiative would not only deter criminal activity but also strengthen social cohesion among residents.
The MCPF representatives echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of education and awareness in crime prevention strategies. They pointed out that involving local communities in structured programmes helps instil a sense of responsibility and vigilance, which are crucial in reducing risks.
Padawan District Police Chief P/Supt Barry Anak William reaffirmed the police’s commitment to working closely with community leaders and organisations. He stated that the partnership with MCPF and the Batu Kitang constituency would serve as a model for future collaborations across the district.
The courtesy visit also underscored the broader role of MCPF in supporting national and local crime prevention efforts. The foundation has long advocated for stronger community-police relations, recognising that effective crime control requires both enforcement and public participation.
As crime trends evolve, authorities in Sarawak continue to explore new strategies to address challenges such as drug abuse, theft, and cybercrime. Community-based initiatives are increasingly seen as a sustainable solution, complementing enforcement with grassroots involvement.
The upcoming programme in Batu Kitang is expected to include awareness campaigns, neighbourhood patrols, and regular engagement sessions between police officers and residents. These measures aim to create a safer environment while encouraging mutual trust and cooperation.
The visit concluded with a shared commitment to ensure that the Neighbourhood Crime Watch initiative is implemented effectively and benefits the wider community. Both sides agreed that continued dialogue and cooperation will be essential in achieving long-term success.
