KUCHING – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg received a courtesy call from the organising committee of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) 2026 on 26 August.
The meeting, held at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi, focused on preparations and the final programme for the regional engineering event, which will take place in Kuching from 2 to 4 September 2026.
The delegation comprised the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) president Ir. Yau Chau Fong, former FEIAP and IEM president Ir. Academician Emeritus Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, and IEM Sarawak chairman and FEIAP 2026 organising chairman Ir. Dr Angelia Liew San Chuin.
During the courtesy call, the organising committee briefed the Premier on arrangements for the event and formally invited him to attend as Guest of Honour.
The Premier has also been invited to participate in the opening ceremony and a fireside chat titled “Engineering the Future of Asia and the Pacific”. The session is scheduled to be moderated by Tan Sri Chuah.
Hosted by the IEM Sarawak Branch, FEIAP 2026 will carry the theme “Engineering the Sustainable Transition Through Innovation and Resilience”.
Organisers said the gathering is expected to be the largest in FEIAP’s 48-year history, bringing together engineering professionals, government representatives, industry participants and other stakeholders from across the region.
Representatives from 28 FEIAP member economies across 25 countries are expected to attend, alongside about 200 international and member-economy delegates.
The event is also expected to attract around 500 participants from industries, government-linked companies and the Sarawak Civil Service. More than 3,000 trade visitors are also expected during the programme.
Several major activities will form part of FEIAP 2026, including the 34th FEIAP General Assembly, the World Engineering Congress and Exhibition, and the Youth Talent Innovation Competition.
Discussions during the event are expected to cover a range of issues linked to engineering and sustainable development. Key areas include the development of future cities, sustainable economic growth, climate resilience and the preparation of future engineering leaders.
The General Assembly will be held in Sarawak for the first time, giving the state an opportunity to present its experience and capabilities to an international engineering audience.
Areas highlighted for engagement include resilient infrastructure, connected mobility, clean energy, energy security, climate action, biodiversity, innovation and talent development.
The international gathering is also expected to provide opportunities for participants to exchange technical knowledge and discuss practical approaches to challenges facing cities and communities across Asia and the Pacific.
Ir. Dr Angelia Liew said the scale of the event reflected regional interest in Sarawak and its development experience. She also highlighted the opportunity for participants to exchange experiences, explore practical solutions and establish stronger professional partnerships.
The programme places engineers at the centre of discussions on how policies and development objectives can be translated into practical infrastructure, energy and climate-related solutions.
With Kuching hosting the event, the city is expected to serve as a meeting point for engineering professionals and stakeholders from across the region.
The organisers said the event would provide a platform for discussions on emerging engineering priorities while encouraging collaboration between professionals, governments, industry and younger talent.
FEIAP 2026 will therefore bring together a broad cross-section of the engineering community in Kuching, with its programme combining institutional meetings, exhibitions, technical discussions and youth-focused activities.
The event is scheduled to take place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching from 2 to 4 September 2026.
