MIRI – Tourism Malaysia has marked the Chinese New Year season with vibrant celebrations at major airports nationwide, as part of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign. The initiative aims to showcase Malaysia’s multicultural heritage while enhancing the arrival experience for international and domestic travellers.
At the national level, the main ceremony was held at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, officiated by YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia. Visitors were greeted with mandarin oranges, symbolising prosperity, alongside official VM2026 souvenirs. The event highlighted strong collaboration between Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and tourism industry stakeholders.
In Sarawak, simultaneous celebrations took place at Kuching International Airport, Sibu Airport, Bintulu Airport and Miri Airport. Each location featured cultural performances, traditional Yee Sang ceremonies, and lion dance displays, reinforcing the festive spirit.
The Sarawak-level event at Miri Airport was officiated by YB Tuan Chiew Choon Man, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia. Guests included Mr. John Teo Peng Yew, Chairman of MAH Sarawak; representatives from MAHB, Malaysia Aviation Group, AirAsia, Sarawak Tourism Board, and Sarawak Tourism Federation. Visitors were welcomed with mandarin oranges and VM2026 souvenirs, reflecting Malaysia’s hospitality.
At Kuching International Airport, the celebration was attended by Tuan Haji Mohamad Anuardi bin Hajani, Deputy Secretary of the Sarawak Federation, and Mr. Morshidi bin Fredrick, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP). Airline representatives from Batik Air, Air Asia, and Malaysia Aviation Group also joined, alongside tourism associations such as the Sarawak Homestay Association.

Meanwhile, Sibu Airport hosted Kr. Clarence Ting Ing Horh, Chairman of Sibu Municipal Council, and YBrs. Mr. Safidi bin Tumboh, Administrative Officer of the Sibu Division Resident Office. The programme included a Yee Sang ceremony, the lion dance, and the welcoming of visitors arriving from Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru.

At Bintulu Airport, the event was attended by YBrs. Puan Donita Kinchang, Public Relations Section Manager of the Bintulu Development Board; YBrs. Puan Sharpini binti Daud, Administrative Officer of the Bintulu Division Resident Office; and YBrs. Puan Suzanna Anak Indiat, Administrative Officer of the Bintulu District Office. The honourable guests were treated to cultural showcases and festive performances.

Adding to the excitement, the official mascots of Visit Malaysia 2026, Wira and Manja, appeared in festive attire, offering interactive photo opportunities. Visitors also enjoyed exhibitions of traditional Malaysian clothing, highlighting the nation’s cultural diversity.
Tourism Malaysia emphasised that these airport celebrations are part of a broader strategy to strengthen destination branding, promote Malaysia as a safe and inclusive destination, and encourage repeat visits. By creating memorable arrival experiences, the campaign supports long-term sustainable growth in the tourism sector while celebrating Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.
