KUCHING, July 28 – The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), in collaboration with its strategic partner Mubadala Energy, has taken a significant step forward in mangrove forest restoration with a field programme conducted at Sungai Lemidin, Kuching Wetland National Park on Monday.
The effort marks the implementation phase of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between SFC and Mubadala Energy in Abu Dhabi on 7 November 2024, reinforcing their shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
Speaking at a press conference following the event, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said:
“Alhamdulillah, we have reached a stage where we can realise this MoU and perhaps in the future, we can sign the next agreement.”
The Kuching Wetland, a designated Ramsar site, was strategically chosen for its ecological importance and accessible logistics. It is one of the three primary mangrove ecosystems in Sarawak, alongside Rajang Delta and Limbang–Lawas.
This latest initiative coincides with the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, observed annually on July 26, underscoring the global significance of mangrove protection.
Datuk Len acknowledged the public’s negative perception of mangrove areas due to mosquitoes and crocodiles, but emphasised their critical role in:
- Acting as a natural buffer between land and sea,
- Serving as breeding grounds for marine life,
- Supporting biodiversity and environmental resilience.
He praised the ongoing dedication of SFC, the Sarawak Forest Department, and Mubadala Energy in enhancing conservation across Sarawak—not just in Kuching but also in central and northern regions.
“These conservation efforts will provide long-term ecological benefits and strengthen the livelihoods of communities reliant on natural resources,” he said.
