MIRI: Strong winds caused significant damage to a fishing boat storage shed at Tamu Ikan, Kampung Batu 1, Jalan Kuala Baram this morning, leaving local villagers startled.
The incident occurred around 8.20am when witnesses reported seeing the shed’s roof being lifted by the gusts before it landed in a nearby area. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.
Henry Jugah, Chief of Lutong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), said a team of firefighters promptly rushed to the scene following an emergency call.
“Upon arrival, our team found that the roof of the fisherman’s shed had been badly damaged by strong winds. No injuries were reported, and the total loss is estimated at around RM30,000,” he stated today.
Henry further noted that the firefighters carried out safety monitoring around the area before concluding their operation at 8.45am.
Villagers expressed relief that no casualties were reported, but many voiced concern over the growing frequency of strong winds affecting the coastal areas of Miri. The incident serves as a reminder for local residents to remain vigilant, especially when storing equipment and materials in areas prone to high winds.
Authorities have advised fishermen and small business owners in the area to inspect their sheds and secure loose structures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
This event marks another example of how unpredictable weather conditions continue to challenge coastal communities in Sarawak, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and timely response from emergency services.
