KUCHING – A major seminar focusing on the application of Shariah law has concluded, emphasising its role as a comprehensive life guide rooted in compassion.
The event was jointly organised by the Shariah Enforcement Division of the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
Held at UNIMAS, the gathering brought together enforcement personnel, academics, and students. The central theme was establishing Shariah’s principles through wisdom and social responsibility, rather than through punitive measures alone.
In a keynote address, JAIS Director, Sahibus Siyadah Ustaz Mual Suaud, underscored that Shariah law is a divine command from Allah SWT intended to deliver justice. His speech was delivered on his behalf by the Acting Director of JAIS, Sharifah Zakiah Tuanku Pauzi.
“Shariah must be upheld with love, not violence, with education, not just punishment,” he explained in his text.
The director elaborated that true adherence to Shariah means integrating its teachings into one’s spirit, ethics, and everyday conduct.
This holistic approach is seen as vital for fostering a just and prosperous society. He further clarified that the objective is to present Shariah as a blessing for humanity.
A key message was the broad responsibility for upholding these principles. He stated that it is not solely the duty of religious institutions. He urged the JAIS Shariah Enforcement Division to act as both educators and guides for the community.
Furthermore, he emphasised that every Muslim bears the responsibility to exemplify these values through their moral behaviour, speech, and actions in daily life.
