PADAWAN – The Christian community residing around Kampung Bawang has welcomed the completion of the long-awaited St George Chapel.
This new place of worship represents the culmination of local endeavour, supported by financial contributions from several organisations.
The total construction cost of RM1.1 million was met through a collective funding effort. The church community itself contributed RM300,000, while the state’s Other Religious Affairs Unit (UNIFOR) provided a substantial allocation of RM800,000.
Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, the Sarawak Deputy Minister of Transport (Air and Road) and Mambong State Assemblyman, officiated the opening ceremony on Saturday.
He described the project as a testament to the cooperative spirit and significant sacrifice demonstrated by the local population.
He stated that the chapel stands as a landmark of both faith and the strong communal togetherness found in the area.
The assemblyman conveyed his pride in the dedication and hard work of everyone involved, which was driven by a profound sense of devotion.
In a move to further support local infrastructure, an additional allocation of RM150,000 was announced. This funding, provided under the Rural Transformation Plan (RTP), is designated for the construction of embankments and landscape beautification around the new church, enhancing both its surroundings and environmental sustainability.
A further RM50,000 was committed under the Rural Minor Project (MRP) scheme. These funds are intended to support the chapel’s programme schedule and community-oriented activities, ensuring the new facility becomes a vibrant hub for local residents.
The opening event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Administrative Officer of the Padawan Subdistrict Office, Julius Scott Sapong.
Also, present were the Vicar of Saint Paul’s Parish Bunuk, Reverend Father Johnny Libar, and the Chairman of Saint George Chapel, Yet Kadun.
The successful completion of the chapel is seen as a significant milestone for the local Christian population, providing a dedicated and modern space for worship and community gatherings after a prolonged period of anticipation.
