Bintulu Port Maintains Role as Sarawak’s Main Gateway

KUCHING – Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) has reaffirmed its position as Sarawak’s principal port, recording cargo handling of 38.3 million tonnes involving 5,649 vessels as of September 2025.

Despite challenges such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) maintenance and adverse weather conditions, BPHB has maintained strong operational resilience and service reliability.

Dato’ Roslan Abdul Ghani, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of BPHB, highlighted that vessel turnaround times remain competitive, supported by an equipment availability rate of nearly 90 percent. “This reflects our continued commitment to operational excellence,” he said.

Dato’ Roslan was speaking at the Bintulu Port Customer Centric Nite 2025, officiated by Sarawak State Secretary and BPHB Chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. The event recognised the port’s achievements and honoured industry partners across 11 categories.

He revealed that BPHB is in the process of implementing a high-tech Port Operating System, the same advanced system used at Yangshan Port Phase 4 in Shanghai, China.

This upgrade is expected to further enhance efficiency and strengthen Bintulu Port’s competitiveness on the global stage.

Bintulu Port consistently handles more than 80 percent of Sarawak’s total imports and exports, underscoring its role as a vital link to international markets and a catalyst for the state’s economic growth.

Looking ahead, Dato’ Roslan emphasised the port’s readiness to support emerging industries. “In line with the global energy landscape shifting towards sustainability, we are poised to play a leading role in new sectors such as green hydrogen and renewable energy logistics. These are new growth areas and Bintulu Port is fully prepared to support them,” he stressed.

The ceremony concluded with recognition of outstanding customers and partners in categories including Liquid Bulk Petroleum, Liquid Bulk Palm Oil, Break Bulk, Dry Bulk, Container (Local), Container (Transhipment), Supply Base, New Dimension Award, Excellence Award, Value Builder Award, and the Pinnacle Award.

The awards highlighted the diverse industries and services that contribute to Bintulu Port’s ecosystem, reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s logistics and trade infrastructure.
