MBKS Upgrades Kenyalang Park Market Stools for Public Comfort

KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) officially handed over upgraded market stools at Kenyalang Park Market this morning as part of the ongoing Love Your Market initiative, aimed at providing cleaner, safer, and more comfortable facilities for the public.

The ceremony was led by Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, alongside Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, Councillor Judy Kho, Chairman of the Standing Committee for Markets and Petty Traders, other councillors, MBKS officers, Market Liaison Committees, contractors, and members of the press.

The upgrade follows a site inspection by the Mayor and Councillors, who discovered many old stools across various markets were worn out, unstable, and difficult to maintain. This prompted the replacement of outdated furniture to improve customer comfort and hygiene.

Kenyalang Park Market, which opened in 1993, is one of the busiest markets in Kuching South, housing 227 stalls—including 47 food stalls—serving thousands of residents daily. Under the project, MBKS removed 728 old pedestal stools and installed new hot-dipped galvanised steel pedestals with 380mm round fibreglass seats. The new stools are stronger, more durable, and easier to clean. The total project cost was RM105,640.

In addition, MBKS installed 30 priority seats with backrests for senior citizens and people with mobility challenges, reflecting the Council’s commitment to creating age-friendly public spaces.

Mayor Wee emphasised that while the upgrade may appear minor, it carries a significant impact. “Better seating encourages customers to dine comfortably, stay longer, and return more often, which helps our hawkers earn a better income,” he said. He also reminded hawkers and market users to take care of the new facilities and report any damage promptly.

The improvement forms part of MBKS’s continuous efforts to develop a clean, safe, and people-friendly Kuching South, while supporting local hawkers and strengthening market culture through the Love Your Market programme.
