KUCHING, March 2 – The Kuching Health Office carried out an integrated enforcement operation under the Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024 on February 25 and 26, targeting smoking and vaping activities in prohibited areas across the city.
The two-day operation covered several key locations, including government premises, workplace buildings, dining places and public parks. A total of 21 officers were deployed for the exercise, comprising 15 authorised officers and six assistants.
According to the Health Office, six compound notices were issued to individuals found smoking in designated smoke-free areas. While the number of offences recorded during this operation showed a decrease compared to previous enforcement actions, authorities stressed that violations are still taking place.
Officials believe the lower number of compound notices may be influenced by the current Ramadan month, when many individuals are observing fasting and public activities are relatively reduced during the daytime. However, the Health Office made it clear that enforcement efforts will not be relaxed.
The integrated operation was conducted under the provisions of the Smoking Products Control Act for Public Health 2024, which aims to safeguard the public from exposure to tobacco smoke and vape emissions in shared spaces. Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited in areas gazetted as smoke-free zones, including government offices, eateries and public recreational areas.
The Health Office emphasised that the enforcement exercise is part of an ongoing commitment to protect the community’s right to breathe clean air. Public health authorities have consistently reminded the public that smoke-free regulations are not merely punitive measures but are designed to ensure a healthier environment for all, especially children, senior citizens and individuals with respiratory conditions.
Enforcement operations will continue from time to time, with officers monitoring compliance in various locations throughout Kuching. The Health Office also called on business operators to display clear no-smoking signage and to advise customers accordingly.
In concluding, the authorities expressed appreciation for the cooperation shown by members of the public and business communities who comply with the law. They urged everyone to play their part in upholding public health standards and respecting smoke-free regulations for the greater good of society.
