MIRI – Police in Miri have confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old man in connection with a shop burglary that took place earlier this month in Permyjaya.
The incident occurred on 5 June at around 3.43am at a nasi lemak eatery located in Pusat Bandar Commercial Centre, Permyjaya Phase 3.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed a man breaking into the premises before removing a cash machine from the counter and fleeing. The estimated loss from the incident was RM590.35.
A police report was lodged later that day at 7.16pm. Following intelligence gathering, officers from the Crime Prevention Branch (CPJ) at Miri Central Police Station, under the leadership of Miri Police Chief ASP Goldy anak Jangan, carried out an operation in the Pujut area. The suspect was arrested at 4.50am on 18 June.
During the arrest, police seized clothing believed to have been worn during the crime as well as the stolen cash machine. The suspect is currently being held in the lockup at Miri Central Police Station to assist with investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which covers housebreaking and theft. Authorities have reminded business owners to strengthen security measures at their premises.
Police advise installing reliable security systems, ensuring doors and windows are properly locked after operating hours, and avoiding leaving cash or valuables inside shops overnight.
ASP Goldy stressed that community cooperation is vital in preventing crime. He urged the public to report suspicious individuals or activities directly to the police so that swift action can be taken.
This arrest highlights the effectiveness of coordinated policing in Miri and reflects ongoing efforts to safeguard commercial areas across Sarawak.
With shop break-ins posing risks to small businesses, police continue to emphasise vigilance and proactive crime prevention measures.
