KUCHING – Authorities in Kuching have confirmed the arrest of a local man in connection with a rape case involving a 16-year-old girl.
The incident was reported on 10 June 2026, when the victim’s mother lodged a police complaint stating that her daughter had been assaulted in an apartment within the district.
Four days later, on 14 June at approximately 10.25pm, officers from the Kuching District Criminal Investigation Division detained a 45-year-old suspect in the Jalan Simpang Tiga area.
Police stated that preliminary checks revealed the man had no prior criminal record, and a urine test conducted during the arrest returned negative results.
The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which stipulates a minimum prison sentence of five years and a maximum of twenty years, along with the possibility of whipping upon conviction.
This section has been applied in several recent cases in Kuching, including a May 2026 ruling where a 21-year-old man was sentenced to ten years in prison and six strokes of the cane for statutory rape of a 15-year-old girl.
Earlier this year, two men were also sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for gang rape of a 14-year-old in the city. These cases highlight the seriousness with which the courts treat sexual offences against minors.
The Kuching District Police Chief emphasised the importance of community vigilance, urging residents to report suspicious or criminal activity without delay.
“We advise the public to remain alert and immediately inform the authorities of any incidents,” he said. Members of the public can contact the Kuching IPD Control Centre at 082-244444 to lodge reports.
The arrest has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about sexual crimes in Sarawak, particularly those involving minors.
Legal experts note that Malaysia’s Penal Code provides strict penalties for such offences, reflecting the state’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals.
Advocacy groups have also stressed the need for greater awareness and education to prevent exploitation and ensure victims receive support.
Police investigations are continuing, and further updates are expected once the case progresses through the legal system.
The authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice is served and to safeguarding the community against such offences.
