SRI AMAN – The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) successfully managed a special service operation on Monday, 15 June 2026, after a stone spill was reported along the Pan Borneo Highway near Kampung San Uncap Undop.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 3.25pm, involved a stretch of road covered with stones for nearly 100 metres.
The debris posed a serious hazard to motorists travelling along the busy highway. Responding swiftly, the Alpha Team from Bomba Sri Aman was deployed to the scene.
Operation Commander PBK I (TBK I) Edwin Jonani led the team, supported by members operating two vehicles: a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) Scania BME 7039 and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit BMY 4446.
The team was equipped with full personal protective equipment to ensure safety during the clean-up. Upon arrival, the firefighters assessed the situation and confirmed the danger to road users.
Using two water streams powered by machinery pumps, the team flushed the road surface to remove the stones.
The operation continued until the highway was declared safe for passage. The clean-up was conducted in coordination with other agencies.
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) from Sri Aman deployed two officers to assist with traffic control, while eight personnel from the Pan Borneo Highway contractor provided additional support.
Their combined efforts ensured the operation was completed efficiently and without incident. Commander Jonani reported that once the road was cleared and deemed safe, the team returned to the station.
The swift response prevented potential accidents and highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation in maintaining public safety.
Stone spills on highways can occur due to transportation mishaps or construction activities, and they present significant risks to vehicles, particularly at high speeds.
The Pan Borneo Highway, a major infrastructure project connecting Sarawak and Sabah, has seen increased traffic flow, making rapid intervention in such cases crucial.
The incident underscores the readiness of Bomba teams to handle diverse emergencies beyond fire-related incidents.
Their role in ensuring community safety extends to environmental hazards, road accidents, and other public threats.
Residents and motorists in Sri Aman have expressed appreciation for the department’s professionalism and efficiency in safeguarding the public.
This operation serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance among road users and the need to report hazards promptly.
Quick communication between the public and emergency services remains vital in preventing accidents and ensuring smooth traffic flow across Sarawak’s expanding road networks.
