KUCHING – Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, officiated the opening of Farley Garden Kuching on 20 June 2026 while also reviewing the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) programme.
In his address, the premier highlighted SKAS as one of the state government’s key initiatives to ease the burden of living costs for vulnerable groups.
He explained that the programme reflects Sarawak’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of its people remains safeguarded amidst economic challenges.
“I take this opportunity to participate in the SKAS programme, which was created to help the people in need,” he said.
The Premier noted that SKAS has now adopted the SPay Global digital payment platform, a move that demonstrates the government’s efforts to modernise assistance delivery.
He emphasised that digitalisation makes the process more efficient and transparent, ensuring aid reaches recipients quickly and securely.
“What I am trying to convey is that we need to move in a modern way. We use SPay Global because it is easier and more efficient in channelling assistance to the people,” he added.
Alongside the launch of SKAS, the premier congratulated Farley on its growth from a small supermarket into one of Sarawak’s leading retail chains.
He drew parallels with international success stories such as Walmart in the United States, which began in a small town before expanding into one of the world’s largest corporations.
“Farley’s success proves that with a clear vision, effort and community support, a local business can grow and achieve greater success in the future,” he remarked.
The Premier’s visit underscored the state government’s dual focus on community welfare and economic development.
While SKAS addresses immediate social needs, Farley’s expansion reflects the potential of local enterprises to contribute to Sarawak’s broader economic transformation.
Observers noted that the integration of SPay Global into welfare programmes aligns with Sarawak’s wider digital economy agenda, which seeks to harness technology for governance, commerce, and public service delivery.
The initiative also complements the state’s push towards financial inclusion, ensuring that even rural communities benefit from modern payment systems.
The event at Farley Garden Kuching, brought together government officials, business leaders, and members of the public, symbolising the partnership between the state and private sector in driving progress.
The Premier’s remarks reinforced the message that sustainable development requires both social support mechanisms and thriving local businesses.
