KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) marked the Dragon Boat Festival on 19 June 2026 by distributing fragrant rice dumplings to neighbours and vendors at Kenyalang Market.
The initiative was made possible through generous donations from citizens, reflecting the strong community spirit that continues to thrive in the city.
The event took place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, a date traditionally associated with the Dragon Boat Festival.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, together with city councillors and community leaders, led the distribution, sharing festive goodwill with traders and residents.
Mayor Wee expressed gratitude to the public for their contributions, noting that the donations enabled MBKS to extend warm wishes to the community during the festival.
“May the warm wishes of the villagers and the peace and well-being of everyone be fulfilled during this festive season,” he said.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Jie, is celebrated across many parts of Asia and is particularly recognised for its cultural traditions, including dragon boat racing and the preparation of rice dumplings (zongzi).
In Kuching, the festival has become an opportunity to strengthen bonds among residents and highlight the importance of cultural heritage.
The rice dumplings distributed at Kenyalang Market symbolised unity and care, with MBKS emphasising that such gestures help foster harmony and mutual respect within the community.
Mayor Wee also extended his wishes for good health and lasting peace to all citizens during the festive period.
