KUCHING – A strategic collaboration has been initiated to strengthen the development of the Agrofood Terminal (AFT) in Kapit Division, with senior officials and agencies convening to discuss planning, management and implementation aspects of the project.
The meeting, chaired by Yang Berusaha Encik Dominic Anak Chunggat, Sarawak Director of Agriculture, brought together representatives from the Sarawak Department of Agriculture, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA) and other relevant bodies.
The session focused on ensuring that the Agrofood Terminal will serve as a central hub for the collection, processing and marketing of agricultural produce, particularly from rural areas.
The proposed terminal is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the agrofood supply chain by providing systematic facilities for farmers and agro-entrepreneurs.
Officials highlighted the importance of empowering local agricultural products, with special attention given to the kelulut (stingless bee honey) industry, which has been identified as a high-potential product for expansion.
Discussions also centred on improving market access and enhancing the competitiveness of agro-entrepreneurs.
By creating added value for agricultural products and offering structured marketing channels, the initiative aims to boost incomes for farmers and rural communities across Kapit Division.
Encik Dominic emphasised that the collaboration reflects Sarawak’s broader development aspirations, aligning with the state’s food security agenda and socio-economic growth strategies.
He noted that the Agrofood Terminal will not only support local producers but also contribute to strengthening Sarawak’s position in the wider agrofood sector.
The meeting was attended by YB Lidam Assan, State Assemblyman for Katibas (N.62), YB Wilson Nyabong Ijang, State Assemblyman for Pelagus (N.61), Encik Sagu Anak Unting, Regional Director of URDA, and Encik Gilbert Igi, Deputy Director of Agriculture, alongside agency representatives.
Their presence underscored the importance of political and administrative support in driving the project forward.
Observers have pointed out that the Agrofood Terminal could serve as a catalyst for rural transformation, offering farmers access to modern facilities and helping them integrate into larger supply chains.
With agriculture remaining a cornerstone of Sarawak’s economy, the project is seen as a step towards ensuring sustainability and resilience in the face of growing demand for food security.
The collaboration is expected to accelerate the development of Kapit’s agrofood sector, providing long-term benefits for communities while reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to rural development and modernisation.
