KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has intensified its efforts to improve food hygiene and public health through the Medan Selera Clean Food Premises Campaign 2026, held at Song Kheng Hai Hawker Centre.
The initiative, which runs from May to July 2026 across MBKS-managed food courts and hawker centres, aims to raise awareness among food operators and strengthen compliance with hygiene standards. The campaign highlights the importance of safe food handling, proper waste management, and maintaining clean premises to safeguard the health of residents and visitors.
The programme at Song Kheng Hai was attended by Cr. Judy Kho, Chairlady of the Standing Committee for Market and Petty Traders, alongside councillors, MBKS officers, and representatives from the Ministry of Health Sarawak. Their presence underscored the collaborative approach taken to ensure hawkers and food handlers adopt best practices in food safety.
As part of the campaign, MBKS officers and Ministry of Health representatives conducted a walkabout at the hawker centre. They engaged directly with food operators, observed daily operations, and reinforced the importance of cleanliness and compliance. Inspections were carried out to assess hygiene levels within the premises and surrounding areas, with guidance provided to hawkers on maintaining standards.
Educational materials were distributed to food handlers to reinforce awareness of proper hygiene practices. In addition, MBKS supplied rubbish bins to every hawker at the centre, encouraging responsible waste disposal and supporting cleaner food environments.
Speaking during the programme, Cr. Judy Kho stressed that maintaining hygienic food premises is a shared responsibility between the council and hawkers. She noted that consistent cleanliness not only ensures compliance with regulations but also protects public health, builds customer confidence, and enhances the reputation of MBKS-managed centres.
She further emphasised that MBKS will continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Health Malaysia and other stakeholders to promote a culture of cleanliness and food safety. Through ongoing education, engagement, and enforcement, the council remains committed to ensuring that food premises across Kuching South uphold high standards of hygiene.
The Medan Selera Clean Food Premises Campaign reflects MBKS’s broader commitment to creating a safe, clean, and welcoming dining environment. By combining awareness programmes with practical measures such as inspections and waste management support, the council seeks to strengthen public trust and improve the overall dining experience in Kuching South.
The campaign will continue until the end of July 2026, reinforcing MBKS’s long-term dedication to improving food safety and public health across the city.
