KAMPUNG BELAWAI – Residents of Kampung Belawai were startled on Friday, 3 July 2026, after discovering a wasp nest the size of a football on the roof of a house.
The alarming find prompted an immediate call to the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Tanjung Manis District for assistance. Upon receiving the report, four APM members were swiftly mobilised to the location.
The team assessed the situation and confirmed the presence of the large nest, which posed a potential risk to the household and surrounding community. Using Ridsect spray techniques, the officers successfully destroyed the nest without incident.
Wasp nests of this size are considered high-risk due to the aggressive nature of the insects and the potential for multiple stings.
Public safety experts note that such nests can cause serious harm, particularly to children, the elderly, and individuals with allergies.
The discovery on a residential roof heightened concerns, as the insects could easily have entered the home or attacked residents nearby.
APM Tanjung Manis reminded the public not to attempt to remove wasp nests on their own, stressing that professional intervention is essential to avoid injury.
The unit continues to encourage residents to report similar cases promptly to ensure swift and safe action.
The successful operation highlights the readiness of emergency services in Sarawak to respond to unexpected hazards. By working closely with the community, APM officers are able to act quickly and prevent potential harm.
Authorities also emphasised the importance of vigilance in rural and coastal districts, where vegetation and structures often provide favourable conditions for insect colonies.
Residents are urged to remain alert and to contact emergency services immediately if they encounter nests near homes, schools, or public facilities.
The Civil Defence Force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, reinforcing its operational motto of readiness and integrity.
The Kampung Belawai case serves as a reminder of the everyday challenges faced by communities and the vital role of emergency responders in maintaining public safety.
