SONG – A search and rescue operation in Song District concluded on Sunday, 5 July 2026, after the body of a missing man was discovered in the Bangkit River.
The victim, identified as 56-year-old Sumok Anak Jugah of Iban ethnicity, had reportedly left his home on 3 July to purchase a gas canister at Sungai Bangkit.
Concern grew when residents noticed his longboat abandoned upstream, prompting the launch of an official search effort.
At 2.55 pm on Sunday, residents of a nearby longhouse spotted the victim floating in the river, not far from where his boat had been found. His body was recovered shortly afterwards, bringing the operation to a close at 6.00 pm.
The search involved 22 personnel from multiple agencies, working alongside villagers from Rumah Panjang near Nanga Bangkit.
Their coordinated efforts ensured the operation was conducted safely, with no incidents reported among officers or members of the public.
Search and rescue missions are a vital part of community safety in Sarawak, particularly in districts where rivers remain central to daily life and transport.
Local authorities emphasise that such operations rely heavily on cooperation between emergency services and residents, who often provide crucial information and assistance.
The Civil Defence Force reiterated its commitment to readiness under its guiding mottos, “Wira Biru”, “Always with Civil Defence”, and “APM Forever”.
Officials reminded the public to contact the Song District Operations Control Centre for emergencies via the national hotline at 999.
This case highlights the risks faced by river users in rural Sarawak, where sudden accidents can occur during routine activities.
Authorities continue to urge residents to exercise caution when travelling by boat and to report missing persons immediately to ensure rapid response.
The conclusion of the operation underscores the dedication of emergency responders in safeguarding communities across the state.
While the outcome was tragic, the swift and coordinated action ensured closure for the victim’s family and community.
