The programme was organised by the Extension Division of the Sarawak Department of Agriculture as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen officer competencies in modern farming practices.

The course, the first of its kind for 2026, was designed to provide participants with comprehensive exposure to hydroponic systems, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical applications.

Officers were trained in areas such as nutrient solution preparation, system installation, plant management, and operational techniques.

The aim was to equip them with the skills necessary to guide farmers in adopting hydroponic projects more effectively.

Hydroponics, a soil-less farming method that uses nutrient-rich water to grow crops, has gained global recognition for its efficiency and sustainability.

In Sarawak, the Department of Agriculture has been encouraging farmers to explore modern technologies to improve yields and reduce dependency on traditional methods.

By training officers, the department ensures that farmers receive accurate guidance and support when implementing new systems.

Participants represented a wide range of divisions, including Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Betong, Sarikei, Mukah, Kapit, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, and Limbang.

Their involvement reflects the department’s commitment to building capacity across the state, ensuring that rural and urban communities alike benefit from modern agricultural practices.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Yang Berusaha Encik Dominic Anak Chunggat, alongside Sarawak Agriculture Director Encik Bogie Juntan, Special Administrative Officer to the Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development.

Also present were Principal Assistant Director of the Extension Division Mr Freddy Paul Giang, Mr Gasan Gani, and several trainers and officers from the Sarawak Agriculture Department.

Officials highlighted that the course not only strengthens technical expertise but also enhances the efficiency of extension services provided to farmers.

By combining classroom learning with hands-on practice, officers are better prepared to deliver advisory services and promote innovation in the agricultural sector.

The Department of Agriculture has confirmed that additional technical courses will be held throughout the year.

In August 2026, the Extension Division will organise a fertigation course, targeting 30 officers from across Sarawak.

Fertigation, which combines fertilisation and irrigation, is another modern technique aimed at improving crop productivity and resource management.

Through these initiatives, the department hopes to create a pool of skilled officers who can act as catalysts for modern and sustainable agriculture in Sarawak.

The long-term vision is to empower farmers with knowledge and technology, ensuring that the state remains competitive in food production while safeguarding environmental sustainability.

Local farming communities have expressed optimism about the training programmes, noting that improved officer expertise will translate into better support for farmers.

With hydroponics and fertigation gaining traction, Sarawak is positioning itself to embrace modern agricultural practices that can meet rising demand and contribute to food security.

The hydroponic technical course in Bintulu stands as a clear example of how capacity-building efforts can strengthen the agricultural sector.

By investing in officer training, the Sarawak Department of Agriculture is laying the groundwork for a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable farming future.
