Sarawak Immigration Detains 24 Foreign Nationals in Joint Operations

KUCHING – The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) Sarawak has detained 24 foreign nationals during a series of enforcement operations conducted across Kuching and Kota Samarahan. The coordinated effort, carried out on 10 July 2026, was part of three targeted initiatives known as OPS MINYAK, OPS SELERA, and OPS MAHIR.

The operations, which ran from 9am to 3pm, were led by the JIM Kuching Enforcement Division. They were initiated following intelligence gathering and public complaints about suspected illegal activities in several areas. Authorities confirmed that seven locations were inspected during the exercise.

Among the premises checked were heavy machinery workshops in Kampung Semeba and Kampung Sudat, Kuching. These sites were scrutinised for compliance with immigration laws and to ensure that workers employed there held valid documentation. In Kota Samarahan, enforcement teams focused on eateries and premises suspected of hosting online gambling activities. Scrap metal yards and second-hand goods shops were also inspected to verify adherence to legal requirements.

As a result of the operation, 24 foreigners were arrested for alleged offences under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155). These provisions relate to unlawful entry and overstaying beyond the permitted period. In addition to the arrests, a witness summons was issued to assist investigators in gathering further evidence.

The Immigration Department emphasised that such enforcement activities are part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public order and uphold the law. Officials stated that operations will continue to be intensified periodically to address violations and deter illegal practices.

Community cooperation was highlighted as a crucial element in ensuring the success of these initiatives. Authorities urged members of the public to report any suspected illegal immigrants or unlawful activities to the relevant agencies. By doing so, residents contribute to maintaining safety and stability in their neighbourhoods.

Immigration enforcement has long been a priority in Sarawak, particularly in areas experiencing rapid development and industrial growth. The presence of undocumented workers has raised concerns about labour exploitation, public safety, and the integrity of local businesses. Programmes such as OPS MINYAK, OPS SELERA, and OPS MAHIR are designed to address these challenges by targeting specific sectors where violations are most likely to occur.

The recent operation also reflects broader national efforts to strengthen border control and immigration compliance. Malaysia has consistently reinforced its stance on illegal entry and overstaying, with penalties including fines, imprisonment, and deportation. By conducting regular checks, authorities aim to reduce the risks associated with unregulated foreign labour and protect the welfare of local communities.

Officials reiterated that the Immigration Department remains committed to enforcing the law fairly and firmly. They assured that future operations will continue to focus on areas identified through intelligence and public feedback, ensuring that enforcement remains responsive to community concerns.

The arrests in Kuching and Kota Samarahan serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in upholding immigration regulations. With continued cooperation between enforcement agencies and the public, authorities hope to strengthen compliance and maintain order across Sarawak.
