SIBU – The Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, joined a brisk walk at Bukit Lima Nature Reserve on 11 July 2026 as part of the Sarawakku Sayang Programme for Sibu Division.
The event was organised by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) to highlight the reserve’s role as both a recreational destination and a conservation site.
The programme featured several activities, including a walk along the boardwalk, a visit to the One Stop Centre (OSC), and a tree planting ceremony.
These activities symbolised the State Government’s ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development, reinforcing the importance of preserving natural habitats within urban settings.
During the ceremony, the Premier witnessed the presentation of a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) certificate to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.
The recognition was awarded for Bukit Lima Nature Reserve’s achievement as the Largest Protected Urban Peat Swamp in Malaysia.
The certificate was presented by MBOR official Tuan Megat Faris Hussein Bin Megat Muzaffar Shah to Tuan Abang Arabi Abang Aimran, Controller of National Parks and Nature Reserves, and Tuan Superi Awang Said, Resident of Sibu Division.
The event also drew participation from senior officials, including Sarawak Public Works Director, Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. QPr. Dr. Cassidy Anak Morris.
His attendance underscored the collaborative nature of the programme, which brought together leaders from different sectors to promote environmental awareness and community engagement.
Bukit Lima Nature Reserve, located within Sibu town, has long been recognised as a unique ecological site.
Its peat swamp forest provides a habitat for diverse wildlife species and serves as a natural buffer against environmental challenges.
By showcasing the reserve during the Sarawakku Sayang programme, organisers aimed to raise public appreciation for its ecological value while encouraging recreational use in a sustainable manner.
The Sarawakku Sayang initiative itself is part of a broader effort to strengthen community ties and highlight local assets across Sarawak’s divisions.
By combining recreational activities with conservation messages, the programme seeks to instil civic pride and environmental responsibility among residents.
Tree planting, a central feature of the event, symbolised the government’s dedication to long-term sustainability.
Such initiatives are often seen as practical steps towards mitigating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and improving urban living conditions.
The Premier’s participation in the ceremony reinforced the message that leadership plays a vital role in driving environmental stewardship.
The recognition by the Malaysia Book of Records further elevates Bukit Lima Nature Reserve’s profile nationally.
As the largest protected urban peat swamp, it stands as a model for balancing urban development with ecological preservation.
Officials noted that the achievement reflects Sarawak’s proactive approach to conservation and its commitment to safeguarding natural heritage for future generations.
SFC expressed gratitude to all distinguished guests and participants who contributed to the success of the programme.
The corporation reaffirmed its mission to manage Sarawak’s forests responsibly, ensuring that conservation efforts remain central to development strategies.
The brisk walk and accompanying activities at Bukit Lima Nature Reserve highlighted the synergy between recreation, conservation, and community engagement.
With continued support from government leaders, agencies, and the public, Sarawak aims to strengthen its reputation as a state that values both progress and sustainability.
