IPD Kuching Arrested Two Men For Syabu Possession in Stutong Area

KUCHING – The Kuching District Police Headquarters has successfully apprehended two local men in connection with the possession of illegal narcotics. The arrests were made on 17 July 2026 in the Stutong area, following intelligence-led operations conducted by officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division.

The suspects, aged 31 and 37, were detained during a raid that targeted drug distribution activities in the neighbourhood. Upon searching the individuals, police confiscated a quantity of drugs suspected to be Syabu, weighing approximately 5.05 grams. The street value of the seized substances was estimated at RM555.

Following their arrest, both individuals underwent initial urine screening tests. The results returned positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, confirming their involvement in drug consumption. Further checks on their criminal histories revealed that the 31-year-old suspect had one prior criminal record, while the 37-year-old had no previous convictions.

Both men have been remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for three days, from 19 July to 21 July 2026. This period allows investigators to gather further evidence and build a case under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. This section of the law deals specifically with the trafficking and possession of controlled substances.

If convicted, the suspects face severe penalties. The law mandates a prison sentence of not less than two years and not more than five years. Additionally, they are liable to receive between three and nine strokes of the cane. These stringent punishments reflect the government’s zero-tolerance stance towards drug-related offences, which are viewed as a serious threat to social stability and public health.

Kuching District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Alexson Naga Anak Chabu, emphasised that the successful operation was the result of continuous investigative efforts and cooperation from the public. He reiterated that the Royal Malaysia Police would not compromise with any party involved in the distribution, possession, or protection of drug activities.

“The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department is committed to fighting drugs to protect the present and future generation,” ACP Alexson stated. He described drug abuse as the number one issue facing the country, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The police chief encouraged members of the public to submit information regarding drug syndicates or users through dedicated hotlines. Tips can be reported to the JSJN Hotline at 012-208-7222 or the JSJN IPK Sarawak Hotline at 017-592-9211. Confidentiality is assured for all informants, ensuring that community members can assist law enforcement without fear of reprisal.

This arrest serves as a stern warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade in Kuching. Law enforcement agencies continue to intensify their patrols and surveillance in high-risk areas to dismantle networks and prevent the spread of narcotics.

The confiscation of even small quantities of drugs is treated with seriousness, as it often indicates larger supply chains operating within residential areas. By targeting these nodes, police aim to disrupt the flow of illegal substances into the community.

Residents in Stutong and surrounding areas are advised to remain alert and report any unusual movements or gatherings that may indicate drug dealing. Community policing remains a vital component of the strategy to keep neighbourhoods safe and free from the scourge of addiction.

As the investigation continues, police will likely examine the sources of the seized drugs to identify suppliers and distributors. The remand period provides crucial time for forensic analysis and interrogation, which may lead to further arrests if additional links to the network are uncovered.
