MIRI (Jan 21): A convoy of 100 four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles from Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia recently came together to deliver much-needed relief supplies to Rumah Chengkik Mangun in Sebatuk, Niah. This heartwarming mission followed a devastating fire on Dec 31, which destroyed 22 doors of the longhouse, leaving 107 residents homeless.

The initiative was spearheaded by Persatuan Kebajikan Prihatin Marudi, whose chairperson, Annekiu Sipun, highlighted the importance of swift action during times of crisis.

“Our policy is to reach out to those in need during desperate times, and this is one of those times. We immediately mobilised resources and collaborated with off-road enthusiasts to assist the residents,” she said.

Support poured in from 24 4×4 off-road clubs across the region, allowing the group to gather food, clothing, and daily necessities. The convoy, comprising 100 vehicles, departed from Miri Public Park last Saturday, embarking on a four-hour drive to reach the affected longhouse.

Annekiu emphasised the need for sustained support to help fire victims rebuild their lives. “There’s definitely a need for greater support for post-disaster reconstruction, and we hope more compassionate individuals can contribute to these efforts,” she said.

Looking ahead, the association plans another relief mission next month for Rumah Paulus Yan in Kanowit, where a fire displaced 88 residents from the 16-door longhouse.

The dedication and teamwork of these off-road enthusiasts highlight the strong community spirit in Sarawak, offering hope to those affected by disasters.
