KAPIT, Jan 21: Rumah Kiong in Sungai Anggau, Ulu Sesibau, will soon benefit from a RM150,000 allocation to build a retaining wall, following a landslide that damaged parts of the longhouse.
The funding was announced by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Native Customs and Laws), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, during his site visit yesterday. The grant comes from the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) fund for the area.
The landslide, triggered by heavy rain last Saturday evening, affected five doors of the 26-door longhouse. While no casualties were reported, the incident caused significant damage to the cement walkway and veranda in front of the longhouse.
Tuai Rumah Kiong Igang, the longhouse chief, expressed relief at the swift response and support:
“Although there was no casualty in the incident, the landslide has seriously damaged the cement walkway and veranda in front of the longhouse.”
To mitigate further soil erosion, Datuk Jamit directed immediate measures, including covering the affected area with plastic canvas. He also advised the longhouse’s Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) to erect warning signs and cordon off the damaged sections to ensure safety.
The deputy minister’s visit was accompanied by Councillors John Lang and Judson Jarrau, as well as his administrative officer Robert Anyau.
This aid highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of rural communities, particularly in addressing natural disasters like landslides that pose risks to livelihoods and infrastructure.
