KUCHING – The Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, together with Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Hajah Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, welcomed Hungary’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Sándor Sipos, during a courtesy visit at the Sarawak State Palace on 18 June.
The meeting was attended by senior representatives from both sides, including Ms Kamilla Balla, Deputy Head of Mission at the Hungarian Embassy; Dato Fenny Nuli, Director of the Sarawak Regional Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mr Cheering Tan, Special Officer at the Hungarian Honorary Consulate Northern Region; and Mr Damien Chua, Honorary Consul of Hungary for the Northern Region.
The session was held in a cordial atmosphere, with discussions centred on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation.
Both parties highlighted opportunities in renewable energy, petrochemicals, methanol, and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technology.
These areas align with Sarawak’s ambition to lead the hydrogen economy and advance its green development agenda in Southeast Asia.
Governor Wan Junaidi emphasised Sarawak’s commitment to sustainable growth, noting that the state has positioned itself as a regional leader in clean energy initiatives.
He expressed optimism that collaboration with Hungary could accelerate progress in energy diversification and environmental stewardship.
The Hungarian delegation also showed interest in Sarawak’s rich biodiversity, recognising its global significance.
Discussions included potential joint efforts in conservation and research, as well as opportunities to build partnerships in higher education and human capital development.
Such initiatives are seen as vital to fostering innovation and preparing future generations for emerging industries.
Governor Wan Junaidi conveyed his hope that the relationship between Sarawak and Hungary would continue to flourish, opening doors to strategic cooperation that benefits both sides.
He remarked that closer ties could contribute to prosperity and mutual progress, while reinforcing Sarawak’s role as a forward-looking state with strong international connections.
The visit underscored the importance of diplomacy in advancing Sarawak’s development agenda, particularly in areas where global expertise and collaboration can enhance local capabilities.
With Hungary’s interest in renewable energy and Sarawak’s growing reputation in the hydrogen economy, the partnership holds promise for meaningful outcomes in the years ahead.
