BETONG – Police in Betong have confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old man during a narcotics enforcement operation known as Ops Tapis.
The operation was carried out on 15 June 2026 at around 11.45am by the Narcotics Crimes Investigation Department of IPD Betong. The suspect was detained in the Betong area after officers discovered drugs in his possession.
He was taken to the Narcotics Crimes Investigation Division office for further examination, where urine tests revealed positive results for both amphetamine and methamphetamine. Authorities stated that the man is suspected of involvement in drug distribution activities.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which covers possession of controlled substances.
Convictions under this section may result in fines of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of five years.
Additionally, the suspect faces charges under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for consumption of illicit substances, which carries penalties of up to RM100,000 in fines or imprisonment for a maximum of two years.
Betong District Police Chief DSP Wan Mohamad Au Bin Wan Malek emphasised that the police remain committed to tackling drug abuse in the community.
He stressed that enforcement will continue without compromise and urged residents to play their part by reporting information related to drug activities.
“We appeal to the community to provide information to the Betong Police Department so that we can act swiftly against offenders,” he said.
The public can contact the Betong Police Station at 083-472345 to share information. Authorities reiterated that community cooperation is vital in curbing drug abuse and ensuring public safety.
Ops Tapis is part of a wider initiative across Sarawak aimed at reducing the prevalence of narcotics. Police have highlighted that drug-related offences pose significant risks to families and communities, and enforcement operations are designed to disrupt supply chains while deterring consumption.
Community leaders have also voiced support for stronger awareness campaigns to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse.
The arrest underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in Betong and beyond. Police have pledged to continue their vigilance and ensure offenders are brought to justice under the law.
