KUCHING, Jan 21: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged the Sarawak Syariah Judiciary Department (JKSS) to adopt innovative practices and align its governance with the state’s e-Government vision.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Syariah Legal Year Sarawak 2025, themed “Syariah Basis of Justice,” the Premier highlighted the critical role of Syariah law in driving inclusivity, harmony, and integrity within Sarawak’s broader development aspirations.
Abang Johari stressed that all public service sectors, including the judiciary, must align with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to transform Sarawak into a high-income region.
Embracing Technology for Judicial Excellence
The Premier underscored the importance of modern technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in enhancing judicial efficiency. He noted that integrating AI into the Syariah judiciary is essential to keep pace with globalisation and digitalisation.
“Without technology, the administration of the Islamic judiciary system risks stagnation, which could hinder justice—a fundamental religious requirement,” he explained.
He also emphasised the need for Syariah judges and legal practitioners to perform their duties with integrity, patience, and dedication, adding that their efforts would be rewarded by Allah SWT.
Commitment to Strengthen Syariah Institutions
Abang Johari reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering the JKSS through measures such as expanding the jurisdiction of Syariah courts, improving the professionalism of judges, and addressing complex cases.
Drawing inspiration from the teachings of Ibn Khaldun, he highlighted the enduring relevance of a fair, independent judiciary in fostering societal stability and progress.
“This event not only reinforces the significance of Syariah law but also paves the way for empowering the ummah and ensuring societal harmony in an era of rapid digital transformation,” he said.
Among the distinguished guests were Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia and Chief Syariah Judge Datu Awang Suhaili Ledi.
