KUCHING – A new era in regional connectivity has officially begun with the launch of AirBorneo, a state-owned carrier designed to function as a vital “air bridge” linking Sarawak with Peninsular Malaysia and key Asian markets.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari announced that the airline would play a pivotal role in strengthening economic ties, attracting foreign investment, and fostering closer people-to-people relationships across the region.
The strategic initiative marks a significant evolution in the state’s aviation landscape following the Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASwings.
While the carrier will continue to uphold its essential mandate of providing Rural Air Services (RAS) to remote communities in Sarawak and Sabah, it has now expanded its operational scope to include commercial flights.
This dual approach ensures that rural connectivity is maintained while simultaneously opening up new avenues for trade and tourism through competitive commercial services.
Speaking at a press conference held after the inaugural flight ceremony for the Kuching-Kuala Lumpur route at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 on Monday, 20 July 2026, the Premier drew a parallel between physical infrastructure and aviation networks.
He noted that the state had constructed more than 20 physical bridges over the past four years to improve internal connectivity.
However, given Sarawak’s geographical separation from the rest of Malaysia by the South China Sea, the concept of an “air bridge” was deemed necessary to seamlessly connect investors, citizens, and economic opportunities.
“This air bridge connects the people, investors and economic opportunities,” Abang Johari stated, emphasising the transformative potential of the new airline.
He described the inaugural flight, which took place just ahead of Sarawak Day on 22 July, as a symbolic gift to the people of both Sarawak and Malaysia, aimed at reinforcing the bond between Borneo and the Peninsula.
A key feature of AirBorneo’s market entry is its commitment to price stability. The Premier revealed that the airline would offer fixed fares of RM375 for the Kuching-Kuala Lumpur route and RM399 for the Kuching-Singapore connection throughout the year.
Unlike many commercial carriers that adjust prices based on peak seasons or demand spikes, AirBorneo has pledged to avoid seasonal increases.
This pricing strategy is intended to make travel more accessible and affordable for students, families, and business travellers alike, thereby stimulating greater mobility and exchange.
The expansion plans for AirBorneo are ambitious and tightly scheduled. Following the launch of the Singapore route on 22 July, the airline intends to commence services to Jakarta within the next two months.
Looking further ahead, the network is set to expand to other major destinations in East Asia within one to two years, positioning Sarawak as a central node in regional air travel.
From an economic perspective, the state government views AirBorneo as a critical strategic investment. The enhanced connectivity is expected to support the influx of capital into high-growth sectors such as renewable energy, semiconductors, and low-carbon industries.
Additionally, the airline aims to boost the tourism and health tourism sectors by making Sarawak more accessible to international visitors seeking medical and leisure experiences.
Abang Johari clarified that AirBorneo’s business model differs significantly from traditional private airlines. The state government will subsidise a portion of the fixed costs, ensuring operational stability, while commercial operations will remain driven by market demand. This hybrid model allows the airline to remain competitive while fulfilling its socio-economic mandates.
“The state government sees AirBorneo as a strategic investment… with AirBorneo being one of the main catalysts in realising that goal,” the Premier said, outlining Sarawak’s long-term aspiration to emerge as a regional economic hub that contributes significantly to Malaysia’s overall growth.
The launch event was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, underscoring the national importance of the initiative. Among those present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah Haji Yusof, Speaker of the Dewan Negara Senator Dato’ Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, and Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
Also in attendance were Sarawak State Secretary and AirBorneo Airways Chairman Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Haji Hasbi Habibollah, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad Chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmil Khalid.
Their collective presence highlighted the multi-layered support behind this transformative project, which promises to reshape Sarawak’s economic and social landscape in the years to come.
