KUCHING – The historic waterfront area of Minda Hua has received a significant cultural boost with the restoration and unveiling of a traditional “Kotak” fishing boat.
The project, spearheaded by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), aims to preserve the maritime heritage of the locality while serving as a tangible symbol of the hard work and resilience of past generations of fishing communities.
The launch event took place recently, drawing attention to the deep historical roots of the area. For decades, Minda Hua relied heavily on the river for its economic sustenance.
The “Kotak” boat, now permanently displayed as a landmark, represents the livelihoods of countless families who depended on fishing to survive.
It stands not merely as an object of nostalgia but as an educational tool for the younger generation, reminding them that the progress enjoyed today is built upon the sweat and struggles of their ancestors.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who oversaw the beautification initiative, emphasised the importance of remembering local history to foster community pride. He noted that a city which acknowledges its past possesses a unique warmth and identity.

He pointed out that while some individuals were quick to criticise the government and local leadership on social media, they had failed to produce concrete results or contribute meaningfully to the area’s development over the decades.
Dato Wee highlighted the disconnect between online commentary and practical reality. He addressed recent suggestions that state leadership should exclusively use the newly launched AirBorneo airline for travel, noting the logistical impracticality given that the carrier currently operates only two aircraft.
Similarly, he dismissed criticisms regarding local transport initiatives, such as the pink bus service, arguing that such comments often lacked substance and failed to recognise the efforts being made to improve public infrastructure.
“The citizens see it all,” the mayor stated, reflecting a sentiment that residents prefer tangible, down-to-earth achievements over pretty words or political posturing.
He asserted that the people of Kuching desire visible changes and consistent development rather than hollow promises.
Looking ahead, Dato Wee expressed confidence in the future of Minda Hua. He called for a collaborative approach between the community, the state government, and the municipal council to bring in further resources.
