AirBorneo Makes Historic First Kuala Lumpur-Kuching Flight

SEPANG, July 20 — AirBorneo marked a major milestone on Monday with the official launch of its inaugural Kuala Lumpur-Kuching flight, a historic moment that signals a new chapter in Sarawak’s aviation and economic development.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Openg was among the passengers on the landmark flight, which arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at about 3.10pm.

The Premier was welcomed upon arrival by Speaker of the Dewan Negara Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, Sarawak Ministers and Deputy Ministers serving at the Federal level, as well as Members of Parliament and Senators from Sarawak. Also present was Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, who accompanied the Premier on the journey.

The launch carries added significance as it took place just two days before the celebration of Sarawak Day on July 22, making it another important milestone in the state’s journey towards greater economic growth and self-development.

AirBorneo, fully owned by the Sarawak Government, is expected to play a key role in strengthening air connectivity while supporting the state’s long-term economic plans. The airline represents Sarawak’s ambition to build a stronger future through better transportation links and strategic investment.

The new airline is also expected to contribute to the growth of tourism, trade, investment, and regional development by improving access to and from Sarawak. Better connectivity is seen as an important factor in attracting more visitors and business opportunities while supporting local communities across the state.

One of the main goals behind the establishment of AirBorneo is to address the long-standing issue of expensive airfares, which has been a major concern for many Sarawakians. The state government hopes the airline will offer more affordable, transparent, and passenger-friendly air travel while maintaining high service standards.

According to the Sarawak Premier, AirBorneo is a strategic investment that will strengthen the state’s economy for years to come. Improved flight connectivity is expected to create new opportunities across multiple sectors and further position Sarawak as an attractive destination for business and tourism.

The airline also reflects Sarawak’s aspiration to have greater control over its own air transportation network. This includes ensuring that air services to rural and remote areas remain available, allowing communities across the state to stay connected and benefit from future development.

The successful launch of the inaugural Kuala Lumpur-Kuching service marks the beginning of a new era for Sarawak’s aviation sector. As AirBorneo expands its network and operations, the airline is expected to become an important driver of economic progress, better mobility, and improved accessibility for the people of Sarawak.

With the first flight now completed successfully, AirBorneo begins its journey with high expectations from both the state government and the public, carrying hopes of delivering reliable, affordable, and quality air travel while supporting Sarawak’s long-term development goals.
