BETONG – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Betong District successfully carried out an emergency operation on Sunday, 5 July 2026, following a public report of an insect nest at Rumah Panjang Gawis, Ulu Padeh, Betong.
The call was received after residents discovered a nest on a branch of a cempedak tree within the longhouse compound.
The nest, identified as belonging to fly stinger insects, was located approximately 10 metres above ground level, posing a potential risk to the community.
Three members of the APM Betong unit were immediately deployed to the site. After conducting an inspection, the team confirmed the presence of the nest and initiated a destruction operation.
Using controlled burning techniques, the officers successfully eliminated the nest without incident. Following the operation, monitoring was carried out to ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
Authorities confirmed that conditions were secure, allowing residents to move freely without fear of insect attacks.
The swift response prevented any injuries and ensured that the longhouse community remained protected.
Insect nest destruction cases are a recurring challenge in rural Sarawak, where vegetation and fruit trees often attract colonies.
Public safety experts note that nests located near residential areas can pose serious risks, particularly to children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to stings and allergic reactions. APM Betong expressed appreciation to the public for their cooperation and vigilance.
The unit reminded residents not to attempt to remove insect nests on their own, as such actions could lead to serious injury. Instead, the public is urged to contact the Civil Defence Force for professional assistance.
The operation highlights the importance of community awareness and collaboration with emergency services. By reporting hazards promptly, residents enable authorities to act quickly and prevent potential harm.
The Civil Defence Force continues to emphasise its readiness to respond to emergencies across Sarawak, reinforcing its role in safeguarding both people and property.
Residents in Betong are encouraged to remain alert and to report any similar incidents immediately to ensure swift intervention.
