MARUDI – Civil Defence personnel in Marudi successfully captured a python from the ceiling of a resident’s kitchen on Wednesday morning, following an emergency call to the District Operations Control Centre (PKOD).
The incident occurred at Lot 350, Kampung Narum, where a local resident reported the presence of the snake inside their home.
The complainant, who was unharmed, guided officers to the location of the reptile. Charlie Squad, consisting of three members led by Private (PA) Beatrice Kalang, was dispatched to the site.
The team travelled a short distance of approximately 25 metres from the operations centre before arriving at the residence.
Upon inspection, the python was found lodged in the ceiling of the kitchen. Using specialised equipment designed for safe handling, the squad carefully secured the snake. The reptile measured around 1.6 metres in length and was caught without incident.
The operation was completed efficiently, and the team returned to the Marudi PKOD after ensuring the area was safe. No injuries were reported during the intervention.
Snake-catching cases are a recurring challenge in Sarawak, particularly in districts where residential areas border natural habitats.
Pythons, though not venomous, can pose risks due to their size and strength. Professional handling is essential to prevent harm to both residents and the animals themselves.
The Civil Defence Force regularly responds to similar wildlife-related emergencies, including snake sightings, insect nest removals, and animal rescues.
These operations highlight the agency’s readiness to act quickly and effectively in safeguarding communities.
Residents are reminded to report wildlife encounters promptly to ensure timely intervention. Emergency assistance is available through the national line 999, with local PKOD centres also providing direct support.
